I agree, a dust collection system is very expensive. Take a look at this web site, http://www.dustbeegone.com . I got one of those masks 3 years ago at least. It is as good as new. I have a high allergy to dust and this mask has served me just fine. It is washable and very easy to breath through. I find resperators difficult to breath through and not comfortable. Maybe this mask is a good alternative for you. Good luck.

If you have an tshirt and a sewing machine I have a plan that some scientist developed to fight an epidemic if it ever hits major cities. Works great for dust. Best thing is that it is free, providing you have a tshirt and a sewing machine. Can be washed repeatedly and it breathes easily. They made a huge amount of these at our prison to protect the population should an epidemic hit.

You can get a 2 HP 5 micron collector at Harbor Freight for about 150 bucks with coupons. Then, you can add a Wynn cartridge (direct fit) for about 100 bucks when money loosens up again. Make a Thien separator or not, either way you've got pretty high power dust collection for not too much money. I also added a PSI dust hood for $30, and the HF accessory kit for less than $50.

Doug and ALL; Duct collectors should be equipped with a 1 micron or smaller bag. The smaller size particles are more hazardous because they stay in the air a long time and go into your lungs deeper.

You should have the best dust collector you can. At minimum wear a good mask.

I agree. That's why you add the Wynn canister -- 0.5 microns. I wasn't suggesting the 5 micron bag is adequate in and of itself (although it is better than nothing at all), but the HF machine is far less expensive (and more powerful) even with the Wynn add on than other systems that start out with a 1 micron rating.

Think dust collectors are expensive? How about emphysema or asthma?

Actually, I have asthma...and a lot of allergies. Not sure how I got into woodworking! :)

A hospital stay will cost a helluva lot more. You really shouldn't be without it.

Not up here, but I agree - it's something that I need.

I might have to take a break from woodworking until I have a bit more money to throw around. I've thought about the HF system, but they don't ship up here, and the customs would likely be a killer anyway.

I guess I'll have to keep shopping around and hope I can find one I can afford someday - and hold my breath when cutting on the tablesaw!

I use a shop vac with a fine particle filter and a 5 gallon cyclone dust separator. Not the fancy one, mine is just a bucket lid that has 2 hoses plugged into it. It works well and keeps the filter from plugging too fast. the only down side is it is rather loud.

Andrew...Take a look at the Lee Valey catalogue. I have their delux cartridge respirator ( $55.00) which I find quite good for light dust, vapors. Also another version for $36.00. I got a Rigid job site air filtfation system for $50.00 from Lee Valley. I only do pens so these are for light dust only. If you have a Busy Bee in your area check them out for dust systems $150.00 and up. Get some dust protection as you can't replace your lungs etc. Darrell Risner

Get a Shop Vac .... $150 or there abouts.

Get a poly 55 gal drum (free sometimes) and try to get one that has a spring clamp top.

Read the article from Phil Thien about how to make a baffle insert: http://www.cgallery.com/jpthien/cy.htm. Information is free, however there is a cost for the fittings, extra hose, MDF for the baffle, screws, etc.

TOTAL COST $225 or way less at times if you have some of the fittings and hose on hand.

TOTAL SAVINGS to your health - PRICELESS

Lung disease treatment ... $100,000 +/-and is quite often not real successful since many folks wait to late to do anything . Kinda like smokers!

The baffle works miracles and there is very little FINE DUST to be found on any filter. I have built one baffle and installed it into my DC system and have yet to need to blow out, clean out any filter material in the line in quite a few months. Everything stays in the drum with NO PROBLEM at all.

Get the best you can aford and if possible mount it outside your shop area. This allows quieter shop area and the real micro dust not stopped by filters are kept away from the shop area.

SHopNotes Magazine has a special booklet called Setting Up the Small Shop that has the plans for a ceiling mounted air filter that uses HEPA furnace filters. You might check that out.

Actually, Grizzly has a bunch of nice dust collectors and much cheaper than the Jet/Delta models but perform just as well.

Check them out. They ship to Canada and even refund some of the fees. You might be able to get a good system for less than you think.

I purchased the 2HP cannister system and totally love it!!
