Has anyone seen Cherry burl where the figure went into the sapwood- white outer part of the tree?. I have cut my share and found a piece with this going on. I removed the wood cooking in the microwave and this went in before it checks or splits. Anyone seen it before?

Hey Alton,
Burl is damage to the tree in one form or another and so yes, the sapwood can be and is often affected. If the burl was started due to severe physical damage, then the sapwood will definitely be affected. If the burl is larger, and therefor older, then often the sapwood regrows around the damaged area, and returns to its original grain pattern

Neil,
Think about it. I think they do. Ever go pound on something just to get the frustration out? Ever see someone shoot at knots or spots on trees, cause it feels good? You should have seen some of the stupid things people in VT and NH do to trees!:biggrin: After living up there for a year, I could give you some real horror stories (actually, you just have to listen to Charlie and Alton:rolleyes:)

Yep, probably most are started from psychological effects

By the way guys, have a great meeting next month. I would say I will be missing you, but then I would be lying, cause I won't be thinking about yous' all

Jerry

Cocobolo Charlie has 36 different varieties of wood and he says they are all Cocobolo . Ever notice every thing I post is Cocobolo to him. Perhaps I shouldn't have shut his head in the van door last year!

Ok, that explains alot. He never did remove the door handle from his ear? Or did the rod just go too deep to safely remove it?

Eventually you will show a picture of Cocbolo and he will identify it correctly, We will all be soooo proud of him then.:) Don't mention the door thing, he still doesn't remember it.
