This is for all of those smart men or women out there that in the past have talked about chemical reaction such as when casting, glueing etc..
Tonight I knocked a bottle of lighter fluid onto the bare cement floor. Pew! I used paper towels to mop it up and then swept shavings and wood dust hoping to cut the smell. I have a vent to the outside so I turned it on also.
I happen to think that maybe vinegar would take some of the smell out of the floor so I swept the floor and poured vinegar on top of the large spot. OK here comes the chemical reaction. After I poured the vinegar it started to hiss and had very tiny bubbles! I was just wondering why?.
Any smart person out there know the answer?
thanks Alice [?][?][?]

I am not a chemist but I believe Vinegar is an acid and cement is a base just the reaction between the two. I use vinegar and baking soda to clean out drains does the same thing. No harm.

Alice, Alan is right. Vinegar is essentially acetic acid and it reacted to the calcium in the conrete floor. It won't react like muratic (diluted sulfuric) acid, but it will react.

Thanks guys! I wasn't worried, I just could not understand what the fizzing was.[;)]

PS It did take away the smell!! Yea!!!

<br />Alice, what did you do with your potential "torch" of paper towels? [:0]

They are right about the acid/cement reaction.
I put them in a plastic bag and put it outside! I'll deal with it after the snow melts which will probably be today! Alice
