Larry,

Should work (for awhile). Be aware that in most refrigeration systems, oil in the refrigerant (e.g. freon) provides the compressor's lubrication. It's this oil that will screw up a refrigerator if you move it on it's side and then stand upright and immediately plug in.
So, in a vacuum situation, the compressor will run without lubrication...for awhile...

HTH,
Tom

Thanks Tom,

Looks like a little research will be the order of the day.

Once cleaning out the resevoir of the oil, and freon(please do so saftey), you should be able to replace it with light machine oil, perhaps even compressor oil.

Of course you could avoid the fuss, just buy one and avoid the hoops and machinations.
This one works perfectly fine. I have one it works very well.

I don't have this one but it is a 2 stage, which sucks more better.

If i am not mistaken, the comp. in a fridge goes out after being sideways, and being plugged in immediately due to air bubbles being trapped in the freon. Similar to if an air bubble makes it to your heart.

nevertheless, without lubrication, it will surely burn up eventually.

Larry thank you for posting this. I was looking for how to do this as we've had one years ago and it worked great. Dad was always rigging things to save money. They work longer then some people think. The oil in them is awful slimey. And I think I have a couple old fridges out back.
