Anyone play disc golf?

I am very interested in starting a local club to try to get a course at the lake i live at but have no idea where to start. I went to the PDGA site, but that was kinda hard to follow. There doesn't seem to be a local club anywhere near me so maybe it would be possible.

any ideas would be appreciated!

Thanks for the list, but that is actually where i started. Unfortunately, those numbers are for public parks, that happen to have disc golf courses. When you call, If anyone at all answers, they will have no clue about disc golf, Let alone the PDGA and how to start a local club.

Since this post, i have done some more homework and think i have an avenue to follow up on with a local university. Now i just gotta come up with a strategy, and $30,000.

$30,000 is ridiculous. I guess that's to be santioned by the PDGA. There's got to be a local club. You could always start down that avenue and just get together every other weekend at a different course. Kind of like a league that travels.

I've competed in a couple PDGA events here at don't really see the benifit of being a member. But I'm not a die hard either. Some of the guys here travel every weekend across the country.

This is a great feature - search for courses with Google map - sort by any criteria and instant results.

Looks like at least a 32 mile drive from Verden to the closest course.

This is my main problem, and the reason i need 30K. I live at a lake that bases the whole summer season on tourism, and there is at least one college 15 minutes away from here.

I really want to get a course installed where i live. To do this, the first step is having a local club. The nearest course is Norman (35 miles), and the nearest club i could find is Tulsa (about 4 hours one way).

If we had a local club, then we could have fund raisers, and disc clinics and such to get the community on our side.

The town that owns tha lake is very greedy, so if i could come up with the money to pay for the equipment and installation (pads, baskets, anchors and signs) and show how it would be a financial and physical benefit to the community, then they would be way more likely to say yes, Or at least that is the vibe i am picking up.

I played a course in Grand Rapids last summer. It was an old course around a lake in a city park. The goose poop peninsula was an unexpected feature.

I have shot courses in South Carolina, Florida, Oklahoma and Chicago. The course in Chicago was the nicest course i have ever seen. Perfectly manicured grass and shrubbery. It was also the only dedicated disc golf course i have ever shot. All the rest were public parks with disc courses.

I am also addicted. My favorite disc is an old discraft Vortex that they dont even make anymore. I would wade through the swamp for that disc. Wish i could find another one like it!

Thanks for that link! That gives me some options to offer when i get a proposal written up!

Most of the GR courses have a lake feature. I'm guessing you're talking about Riverside though. I'm guessing that because of the goose poop comment!

What weight? I have a few old DC discs and i'm pretty sure I have a original Vortex. Let me know and you can have it.

ANY WEIGHT! (170 ish is what this one is, 172 to be exact i think. the numbers are rubbed off and i never scratched it into the disc.)

What color is it? The original Vortex is a Purple disc. They changed the color to white when they changed the disc. I am looking for a purple one. I will send you some blanks for it or something??

WOW that would ROCK! You have no idea some of the nasty water i have been in over this disc. My biggest fear is losing it without one to replace it. I have thrown HUNDREDS of discs looking for the same characteristics and it just doesn't exist. Everyone says "try a this" or "Try a that" but nothing works. Best lefty disc in the world!

I was thinking its maroon, but i'll take a pic to make sure its the right one.
Bear with me a day or two to dig it out of the "sports stuff I never use" bin. If you need any other discs, let me know before I go down there! I've accumulated about 100 over the years and yet I carry the same 10 every time I play. haha

ROFL... I carry one disc when i play. My Vortex!

There is no hurry at all! If and when you find it, just let me know!!

I started with a Teebird and used only it for about two years. Now I'm up to five and had to buy a bag (thought I would NEVER do that).

There are several courses around that have just a few baskets with multiple approaches. That would cut down on cost considerably. Most of my favorite courses don't have any "improvements" just the natural hills and contours, and especially trees.

Sounds like a fun project.:)

With natural tees and pads, 18 baskets shouldn't run more than $6000 - where is the other $24K? Mowing would be a continuing expense.

Yeah, I own 4 or 5 discs but only carry one!

Actually, the 30K is a high ball number. That is what the people in San Francisco figured they needed, but they built a really nice 27 hole course.

Really, the baskets, some signs and maybe some extra anchors would be awesome! Or even a 9 hole course.

I carry 6 or 7 on a regular basis.
Not sure what Ok. is like, but up here, 99% of our courses are littered with huge, low branched trees. You really need a under and an overstable disc on our courses. By the time you figure in a driver, midrange and putter, 5 or 6 discs are easy to think of.

I was supposed to play tomorrow with some friends, but the rain put an end to that.
I'll pull out my phone and take some pictures of a few holes on our local course. It's ridiculous how technical it is!

Wishman.. I never thought i'd carry a bag. If I did, I figured it would be filled with beer. A couple of years ago, I got one for playing in the Michigan Open. I never hit the course without it now! It's so nice to have. And, it holds 4 beers ;)

Most of our courses are kinda wide open. Alot of long 400 plus holes. To be honest, I wouldnt know an understable from an overstable. I just know that the Vortex is an awesome disc! I have a disc that i found with no phone number that i like ok. It is a Discraft Elite Z Crush tie dye. I cant get quite as much control from it as the vortex, but i can usually get a little more distance.

Here's where it becomes technical..
Understable discs will turn or push towards the right.
Overstable will turn or push to the left.
Stable is a straight throw.

So, when you face a hole that the fairway is 5' wide, with trees on both sides, then your cage is set up after the trees to the right, you use an understable disc.

That crush Z you have should be an overstable. I have that disc (without the tie dye). Most likely the reason you don't have the control, but you have the distance.

Discraft is pretty close to my house. I go down there every now and then and poke around the bins and get some new info.
Last spring, I was there and saw a few friends. They let us go on their "test course" and try out some new discs. Holy cow. I throw flat, usually pretty straight. With their new +-stability discs, my drive would run up 100 yards and turn right on a dime. It's amazing what they can do.

THAT would be crazy fun! Playing around on a test course, with test discs! HOW SICK!

I am a southpaw. Well, actually i am ambidextrous (sp), but i throw lefty. My throw is slightly arched from left to right, unless i stand up REALLY straight at the launch, then it is straight as an arrow. My drive is my strongest shot. I can usually throw quite a bit further than whoever i throw against, and match their accuracy. My mid game, and putting stinks.

Hmmm... Maybe that would be a good reason to get a mid and a putter! LOL.

Don't buy any. Lemme see what I have for you in my stuff. I'm sure I have an extra mid and putter for you!
They'll do you more good than me keeping them in a bin!

Yeah, it was Riverside. The water must have been up shortly before my round, the peninsula (#15) was just mud and goose stuff. I couldn't find #18.

Got frustrated yesterday with guys that throw their trash around the course. I picked up a bagful without trying too hard. How can a guy carry a Gatorade bottle for 16 holes and toss it when there are just two holes left to play. Turkeys!

Any courses you'd recommend? I travel several states as a courier and get to play some out-of-the-way courses.

If you travel to Michigan a lot, then for sure. Firefighters Park in Troy Michigan is a great course. They just changed the layout this season, so I don't know how its set up.
Otherwise Kensington Park in Milford and Addison Oaks in Rochester..
Towards the westside of the state, there's Meyer Oaks in 3 Rivers, Coldbrook in Kalamazoo and Morris Park.

Other than that, closer to you, there's a nice course in Temperance, just over the border.
