Has anyone ever used the black/white (wing) or irradescent (tail/breast) Turkey feathers in a casting for pen blanks? I have a few and was wondering how they would turn out. If you would like to try some Turkey feathers I can send some to the first couple that post here. Thanks.

JohnU has sent me several feather blanks, over the years. The other night I got to turn for a while, so I grabbed a couple very old (2 years) blanks he made for me. One was a very dark feather sierra> as I turned it, I was not impressed. Finished turning to size (regular sierra--not much "meat") and it still looked like DARK feathers. Started buffing and when I moved from the tripoli to the white diamond, I could see an iridescence. After white diamond buff, the blank was BEAUTIFUL!!!

I asked John about it, he said he had done some, but no real big reaction to them, so he kinda quit.

I really was impressed, so I think John will go back to making some, soon.

COOL PEN!!!!
Hope this helps---Ed

He did a couple for me and I had a reaction. A very good reaction. I hope he never makes another so that mine will be more valuable.:biggrin:

Like the pen John. I'm sure the wing feathers would be even harder to tie down due to the stiffness.

Yes, I tried them and decided it was best to make my hunting arrows with them. But I like the barred look so I use peacock barred feathers for that. Lol
