When casting tubes with stamp on them do I need to use something to prevent the stamps from changing color one the resin is added. Also same question with snakeskin.

Yes you will need to coat it with a color preserver like U-40 Color Lock. Otherwise the resin will bleach it out. The same goes for the snakeskin I believe.

Not so sure about that, never had any issues when i cast my snakeskin blanks or labels, but i do seal them with a good layer of CA before casting

I rarely seal labels (printed with ink jet printer), stamps, or snake skins. But, if I do I use CA glue. I use a layer of CA on snakeskins more so than on labels or stamps.

Not sure about the Trondak U-40. I have tried the Flex Coat color preserver with horrible results. It seems to get really gummy when the PR cures and I have had the PR "spin" over the casted material ruining the blanks. For printed decals I use Krylon Crystal Clear over the waterslide and it works great. For other items like stamps and snakeskin, nothing beats a good coat of CA.

Just as an FYI, U-40 and Flex Coat color preservers are used in the manufacture of custom fishing poles. The nylon thread typically used is super vibrant when wrapped on a rod but will immediately become super translucent once epoxy finish is applied. This makes the thread change color basically to the rod blank. The color preserver works as a seal coat to prevent this from occuring.

Don and Seamus,
Do you find that sealing skins with CA (and letting the cure 24-48 hrs) works better than painting them with uncatalized resin just before casting?

Monty,
I've done both with about equal results but I now use CA over the skins and am having very successful results. I tend to like the use of CA better.

Don & Seamus,

What thickness CA do you use and how is the best way to apply.

Dan

I use "Monty's" CA, there are other sizes to choose from, this just happens to be the size i purchase. I use my fingers to apply it, however, its easier and less messy to apply it using a latex glove on your hand. There is no right or wrong way of applying it, just do what works best for you

I put the tube between a dead and live center with a small piece of wax-paper on each end. I apply the ca with a piece of thin foam packing mateial that comes around most everything these days. I use medium CA and a very quick shot of aerosol mild accelerator. Let is cure for a couple of days before casting.
Do a good turn daily!
