Looking at colored powders to use in non pressure/vacuum casting.

My question is will the powder coating powders work. I have read several posts where they don't seem to readily mix well with the clear resin.

I'm asking, because I have a local supplier and could save on shipping costs as well as get a decent price on sample sets. (So they say)

Thanks much for your insight.

I have used the powder coat, it does not mix as well as some of the other types of powder. If you mix it and let it sit for a while the sediment will settle to the bottom.

I have been having very good results with the powder coating collors for HF. I mix it with Acetone in a small cup first then added it to my resin. It mixes completely that way and have been ever since i started doing it with the acetone. Give it a try to see how you like it.

what does it mean?

What does the color for HF <-- mean there?

HF = Harbor Freight pressure pot casting?

I have used HF colors with good results, but I do use a pressure pot most of the time. You must mix well. I use a tongue depressor stick in my hand drill to mix. This might introduce bubbles but I have cast without the PP and didn't really have a problem as long as you do not use so much hardner that the resin hardens too quickly. The price is right with the HF Powders. The colors available from HF include white, black, red and yellow, I believe. Good Luck

Powder coat is ok for casting but it is just straight color . It has no life , no swirls , no beauty . To get swirls you have to add pearl-x any way so it doesn't make sense . Just buy the coastal scents mica powders in the first place and save yourself the problems with mixing or having to add acetone to your resin , which can't be good for the resin .
The mica powders are $3 to $4 for an ounce , which is enough to make many , many blanks and you can make some beautiful swirls with it .

Chris , the mica powders mix very easily with the resin , nothing extra is added to make it mix completely . By not having to beat it to heck to get it to mix , you also don't have problems of adding air to your resin and end up with pinhole bubbles , which I have had problems with , not a big problem with lighter colors but with black is a pain .

Thanks for all the advice. I have a couple of Mica powders I will try, but I found a local supplier (read 4 miles from my house) and they have some "wild" colors in powder coating powders. Just thinking... By all means keep the discussion going. The more the merrier.
