I was wondering if its possible to cast over a casting. Say one were to stick something to the brass tube which is painted first, cast it in clear resin, turn down to about 1mm above the stuck on items, polish stick on more only overlapping, cast again, maybe repeat once more to create a 3d effect. I know the ends of the blank would be quite thin but they could overlap more in the middle of the barrel it its turned with a slight bulge. That way you could do it a few more times. Would it be a waste of resin?:confused:

Karl,
Is it possible? Yes, it is possible. A new layer of polyester resin will stick gto the old layer and will be seamless. Will you get the 3D effect you mentioned.? I don't really think so. I think you would be better off to just glue the objects to to the tube and cast. I tend to think the second or third layer would hide the layers below, unless the objects are strategically placed and then I;m not sure you will get the effect you seek.

If you decide to pursue this and want to visit feel free to email or PM me and we will see what we can figure out. Put a few (if you have some to spare) in the pkg with the blanks and I will see what I can do with them if you would like me to help you out.
Do a good turn daily!

It can be done, you do not need to "polish" between layers. A sanding with 320 grit, then a quick wipe with acetone has worked for me.

Would there be visible sanding marks from that grit viewable after the next casting. Would that casting then magnify those scratches?

Cheers Don. I don't know if I'll have enough but I can get more that are already dried. I'll get them as soon as possible and send them on

Yes it can be done , it is best to polish each layer or at certain angles the layers will be visible , it won't work well with a kit due to the ends being thin to match the kit hardware , it will give a very nice 3D effect if you can seperate the layers enough .
