Not sure attempting to cast pistachio shells has been tried before. I assume by now most things have been attempted. I started trying to turn the blank and find these shells are hard as rock! Hope I can finish the pen without a blow out. I'll show results if I can get it finished.

Looks good so far. I've never tried pistachio but I did attempt walnut once. It was also very hard. Good luck and looking forward to seeing the finished pen.

Mike; This is quite the phychedelic blank!!! I could have used this back in the 60's. Would have made a very interesting roach, SORRY, Braclet Assistant. Can't wait to see the finished pen. Keep your tools sharp and cut slowley. Use thin CA every few cuts to hold everything together. Jim S

Up in smoke! Quite difficult to turn. I used the disk sander for the last half and then I pulled out the carbide tool with a new blade just to make light cuts to get it true. Should have stuck with the sander. Maybe next time. Somewhere in the shop lies that chunck of blank. If I find it maybe it can be saved.

Sorry to hear that. Just a thought... If that's Silmar 41, glue a few more shells to that exposed tube and recast that piece to finish it off.

Well that sucks!! I think I saw one a few years back, not sure what the outcome was. Were they salted or raw?

Mike; You wouldn't happen to have a spare blank would you? I would like to try turning it on my micro mini metal lathe. Much more control of speed, depth of cut, and pressure. Jim S

Sorry Jim, I just made one blank since it was just an experiment.

After studying the turned tubes in the picture above it gives me another idea--toe nail clippings. Wouldn't that make a great pen!

Do you think belly-button lint would need to be stabilized?
