There's a guy at my office who wants me to make a bottle stopper for his brother. He wants a type of "maroon-ish" wood with a pin on top. The pin is a small metal one with some colored resin on top (his favorite soccer team).

I don't like the idea of just having the pin secured to the top of the wood, so I'm curious, what's the best way to fasten it, then cast the top only in a poly resin so that it's encased and not exposed? Or is that a bad idea?
Would the resin even stick to the wood? And how would i prep it?

Thanks guys

Nic

that first one is a good starting point. i wouldn't be using glitter or anything. and i'm not sure yet if i want the pin to be suspended or the back of it of the pin butted up against the wood and just slightly sealed

One thing you might consider - if you want the pin suspended in the resin is to let it harden to the point the pin will not sink (you can let it set up entirely if you wish), place the pin in and re cast on top. The first pour and second pour will bond together.

That's true, just haven't decided if I want it to be backed up against the wood or suspended

Every time I watch one of Cap'n Eddie's videos, I end up taking away half a dozen ideas that I wasn't even looking for.

That was going to be my sugguestion. Kind of sandwich the pin inbetween the resin. then you could invert the wood on top of this and pour again.
