I tried to cast a sticker and it shrunk.
I had my wife find a rebel flag ( I live in Louisiana) picture on the computer, she found one and sized it to a Classica tube and printed it on regular Avery type paper. I then stuck it to the tube real good and cast it in clear resin, all looked great till I looked at the seam of the sticker. It had opened up I would say 1/16th of an inch which made it scrap.
The question I need to ask is what should I use for printing an image on if regular sticky paper shrinks?
Thanks for any help that may be given.

Try decal paper, print and seal it. Then, cut it out, apply to tube and re-seal it before casting. It takes some practice to get them right.

I also give myself a little bit of overlap on the seam. It only takes a little overlap to prevent that shrinkage....

Give it another go with 1/16" overlap and see how it works....

Good luck!!

...and(modge podge will) turn milky when cast if using polyester resin. Not every time but it does happen. I have had no problems using Avery labels with a slight overlap. The labels must be securely pressed onto the tube and given enough time for the adhesive to dry. Casting labels and snake skins can't be rushed. The painted tubes must be given time for the paint to dry. The label adhesive must be given time to dry. The modge podge must be given time to totally dry. How much time? I give at least two days for each. Others may disagree and that is OK too.
Happy casting.
Do a good turn daily!
Don

I put a thin layer of Modge Podge (from Michaels) over the label. It will dry clear and hold the seam in place.

Here's another tip that I had discovered and works very well. I had problems in the beginning with my money blanks the paper would wet and go dark and transparent. Drove me crazy I found that sealing it with CA solved the problem.

This is how I do it glue the paper on your tube as usual I use Mod Podge you mite use a sticky paper. Now let that dry 24 hrs. Then take it to the lathe put it on I use delrin finishing bushings and give it 2 thin coats of medium CA use a plastic parts baggy. Put a couple drops on and smooth it out wile the lathe runs at low speed """NO B.L.O.""" I put 2 coats on it doesn't have to be real smooth. Let it dry real good at least 24 hrs even though CA feels dry rite away it still out gasses for at least 24 hrs and if you cast it the gasses have no where to go. Then I cast as usual with PR the PR goes over the CA just fine.

Just sharing my technique I don't keep too many secrets.:rolleyes:

That peel up can also be fixed by adding a small dab of CA glue to the edge where the two sides come together. I suffered through this probelm before I finally figued it out. Now I have no problems...

Well Bruce, i like the idea of sticking it on the lathe to seal with CA. I use the same technique as you except i've been CA'ing the label in my hand while wearing gloves. Never really thought about the lathe:rolleyes:.

Although I haven't cast a blank using it, I seal all my cigarbands with a spray poly acrylic before I gule them to the blank and begin my CA finish. It seems to protect the label just fine for my purposes. Don't know about casting though.
