Casting a fishing worm...

Got a good buddy about to retire from the Marine Corps after 24 years...he's a fishing nut.

Had the wild idea of trying to cast a rubber/soft fishing worm into a blank.

Anyone ever try it?

I remember as a kid they used to eat up some of my tackle boxes...so I am wondering what one will do to resin.

Imagine stretching over a blank with a carefully placed hole and then casting.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't be surprised if the plastic worm disintegrated. I've had rubber/plastic worms kinda melt if it was by another type of lure in my tackle box. I think the chemical reaction from the resin would mess it up. JMHO

I promise you will be disappointed with the results. Not only will the resin not stick to the worm, the worm will "melt" from the heat from curing. I make custom fishing rods and have tried this before with everything from west systems epoxy to polyesther resins. Your best bet would be to cast a fly or something along those lines.

Why not try some Flies and Feathers?

yeah, that is a fall back if the worm thing fails - I am going to tear apart a few different ones and put a few in some resin for S&G's...might be fun

He's not a fly fisherman...mainly bass/stripers etc so the feather/fly aspect is not in line with his type of fishing.

I owe this guy a LOT and want to make the right pen for him. I already made him a Koa/Cart pen with one of Larry's fine cart pens. Gotta top that!

Have you thought about first casting the worm itself out of different material? Sort of like jewelers who use the lost wax method. This, of course, would be the procedure commonly referred to as "lost worm":cool:

If you go to a toy store, look a Creepy Crawler mold. Take the worm mold from the kit and cast a very thin PR worm of a contrasting color that you want to use on the pen base. "Over turn" the pen barrel base enough to allow gluing the worm to the pen base. If the worm is too thick, sand the back side of it with a round file until it exactly fits the pen barrel. Once everything is glued up and had time to degas, cast in clear resin. Then turn it. DAMHIKT:)
