Hello.. I am new around here and i would really like to learn to cast my own blanks but have no idea where to start. I looked around here a bit, but it seems that a guy would have to do a whole bunch of reading to learn how to do this.

Is there a thread, or a site somewhere that someone could kindly lead me to that is "Casting for dummies" kinda deal. Like i mentioned, i have no idea where to even start. i guess you need a vaccuum pot or something, and some kind of alumilite and other stuff i am guessing?

anyway.. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ron, when your at the gathering at my house, there might be a fellow who could lead you in the right direction.

If you want a "Casting for Dummies" book, you gotta write it! No such thing, to my knowledge. Wish there were. But trial and error will either become your best friend, or you'll quit doing it in a few weeks.

To be honest, that's where I've had the most fun! If someone told me exactly how many drops, every time, how many strokes with a stir-stick, yada, yada. PHOOOEEEY! I grabbed some PR, made some hilarious mistakes, felt like Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein (hmmm, where's that assistant of mine) and have been having a total blast almost daily ever since January.

It's a Magnificent Obsession, go make some fun!

Dale

P.S. There is a WHOLE LOT of material here that you do need to read first.

There are several articles in the library including the best one I've ever read. It is "Casting Poly Resin" by Richard Greenwald and is in the 2008 year group.

Also, there are other articles at http://www.penmakersguild.com in the articles section.

Also, read the various threads in the "casting and stabilization" forum here on IAP.

May I get on my soapbox? I really am not aiming this at any one in particular and I don't intend to offend anyone. We have a great library here and over on the yahoo group we have a great files area. It amazes me how many of us never take the time to browse those great resources. I go there (to both of them) often and learn something new almost each time. Now I'm climbing down. Thanks.

Do a good turn daily!

Ron-

The first 2 recommendations have already been made:
1) Hit the library
2) Check out grub32 (and others) on youtube.

Then I make my (shameless) plug for the Resin Color Library.

Which is full of hard data and pictures to help answer the questions of
"Which pigments do I need to make this color?"
"How quickly will it gel?"
"How much MEKP should I use?"

It's approaching 100 recipes. (most of the low 90's are waiting
to get scanned and entered).

Also- all who use it are encouraged to contribute. The idea's like your mother's recipe box- lots of recipes, not necessarily all her creations. It's easy- just look at recipes 60 and 61 which are from another article Charles did and I (with permission) ported over to the library.
