I am getting ready to cast some mini pine cones from an important family location.
I have all the directions straight. Before Christmas Curtis was very helpful telling me all the in and outs. thanks Curtis!
Anyway---------- Should I cast them clear with some color or with some sort of pearlish powder? I was thinking pearl with color but my son says clear, that the pine cones should be seen because of where they are from.

What's everyone's opinion?
Thanks Alice

Pearl color....if you go with clear, the tubes will also show and won't be interesting/attractive.

The pine cones will show even with the pearl & color though you'll only see the cones where they meet the final surfaces of the turnings. It's still a pretty cool effect!

Check the archieves here and see what looks good to you. Go to Photos and in the search forum type in pine cone pens and look at the examples. Just trying to be helpful in the search feature that is available. Also may make a difference in what type pine cone casting you are talking about. Are these mini cones or a large cone stripped down??? Color always adds some excitement. Not necessary to be pearled.

Hi Alice. I sent some Ohio Burl Oak Caps to George (Robutacion) late last year. This was for a pen casting for my father-in-laws 90'th Birthday this next summer. He grew up next to that tree his entire life! His Grandparents, His parents, Him and his sister's family... It's HUGE!

Last August I collected some of the acorn pods - frilly/fluffy ends. I sent them to George to play with... He has not had a lot os success, but will try a few more options.

Having read your background... You've been on this path before . I'll vote for a pearlish powder!

Best regards, Mark

Thanks everyone! I appreciate everyone's input.
The pine cones are MINI ones. Good point about going clear and seeing the tube.
I will try to find some photos and see what I like the best also.
What if I painted the tube white and made the Aluminite a clearish white with the diamond dust, then swirled with aluminite with white pearl? So two tones of white just to give some interest.
I have some extra mini cones of no importance. I think I will try a couple of different things.
these were supposed to be for Christmas but I did not have the time to get them done. Now they are for my siblings birthdays so May 6 is when the first one is due.
I'll post the results when I get them done.
thanks again,
Alice

I'm fixing on cast some small pine cones here too and I have just a few that are prey dry so it shouldn't mess up my alumilite. I just can't find any of the mini pine cones but I know they are around here some where. The only ones I have seen around my neighborhood are the small ones not the mini ones. It's going to be fun casting and experimenting... Fay
