Can you identify this leaf?

This is a leaf from a tree in Arlington Cemetary. The tree shades the resting place of Harry Stack Sullivan who was important in the early years of American psychiatry. A friend who is writing a biography of Sullivan asked for my help in identifying the tree, via the leaf.

And I, of course, turn to you.

It might be the cedar elm

It looks like magnolia to me, but one of the deciduous ones like a saucer or sweetbay magnolia, not the evergreen southern magnolia with the thick leaves. Can you describe the tree at all?

If you contact them it is very likely that they can tell you exactly.

Actually, I have no idea who H.S. Sullivan is, so I shouldn't make fun -- he may be a relative after all. [:0]

I'm pretty sure what you have there is what we call down in Georgia, a water oak tree leaf. Sometimes also know as a pin oak. I have a yard full of them at the moment with 12 of the trees in my yard. []
