The man I got this from said it was black quartz. I have no idea. I have searched the internet, but I couldn't determine what it is. I found a smokey quartz that looked alot like it. Any stone experts that can tell me what this is?
Thanks in advance for the help.

It looks like obsidian. If the edges are almost razor sharp it most likely is. Polishes out very well but it might be a little hard to make a pen from. Check for lapidary shops in your area they can tell you for sure.

I don't think it looks like obsidian unless it has a bunch of inclusions in it. Obsidian will break with a conchoidal fracture like glass will and will be much smoother on the fractured faces if it is pure obsidian, not with many small, jagged faces like you show in the photo.

Unfortunately I can't give you much direction in what it actually is, sorry.

Thanks for all the suggestions and links, I'm still reading all the links. I don't know if this gives a clue or not, but when I was chipping the pieces off, I had to really hit it pretty hard to get it to chip off and there was a small amount of a glittery looking powder from the pounding. also the pics seem to have more of a brown tint to them compared to looking at the piece. Looking at it, it looks jet black, until you look real close, then it looks like a field of black with brown streaks through it. The pics were taken in direct sunlight, I think I'll set up the studio lighting and see if the pics look the same.
