well, life is really busy and haven't had much time to play and work in the shop...BUT, the LOML wants a little pocket type camera for herself. As I am the one buying it, I would also like to buy one that takes great pen pics.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I appreciate any input...enjoy the day.

For a small light camera I have a Nikon Coolpix and love it . It takes good pen pictures if you have enough light and overall pictures are great . They start about $90 and go up from there .

For ultimate pen photography look for 4 things:
Macro mode
Custom White Balance capability
Manual focus capability
Manual aperture setting capability

For home use look for good optical zoon (4x or better) and good low-light capability.

DPReview.com is your friend for comparing cameras.

Canon or Nikon are your top brands although the casios are pretty nice too.

Hi Grub,
Sony, Canon, Nikon are all good but one thing that for me is a must with any digital camera, is a viewfinder. A large screen is useful but I've got to have a viewfinder.

Samsung S850, about $190 at Walmart (at least they had'm about a year ago)
We liked the first one so much, we bought 3 more!!
It has more features than my Minolta digital that cost me about $800!
Highly recommended, macro goes down to about 3 cm!

I recently got a canon powershot sd1100is, takes great pen photos and we got great shots when we were in Mexico two months ago. Great settings capabilities. goes for about $140.00.

I second this recommendation. I had the older powershot and thought I upgraded to a nikon coolpix I could never get the Nikon to take decent pictures. It was too small to hold comfortably, the white balance sucked and was always "cold". I will be picking up the sd1100is within the next month or two.

I am a Canon fan.

Anything with IS will help you in general camera use. I agree that custom white balance and macro will help you with pen pics. I never could get 'manual' modes on point and shoot cameras to work well. I have actually entered the world of dSLRs now (yes, Canon). I own two other Canon P&S's and still use them.

Yes, DPReview.com is a whole other world where you can spend days reading about camera stuff....

Good luck.

I have bought my wife numerous cameras over the years. A couple years ago I got her a Pentax pocket sized digi cam. It had everything you could want. Except it went through batteries like a hog. Two to four pics tops, without flash and her AA batts were shot.
So, I got her a Nikon Coolpix and it is great. Good close ups, batteries last. She loves it. There are many Coolpix models, just go to the top of your budget and get the one that comes closest.

I use a Canon Power Shot A560 . Bought a Kodak Value Charger with 4 rechargable batteries for $11.00 at Walmart . (after going thru a lot of AAs)

I just bought a Canon Power Shot A1100is Sat. My first picture is posted under Hockey Clip Used in the show of your pens. It was taken on Auto. It has automatic macro which is great. Good Luck. Rich
