vasmandj (Darrel) was so kind as to send me a box of wood native to his area of California. A nice 8" x 8" x approx 4" piece of redwood which I made this bowl from this afternoon and around it was packed another piece of curly redwood and a piece of mulberry and a piece of eucalyptus and some mulberry pen blanks.

Thanks again Darrel.

I picked this wood up at my P O box on Monday just over the border at the same time as I picked up a texturing tool that I had ordered .

I found the redwood a nice species to turn. Softer and created more dust than I expected but I wore dust protection.
I should have applied sanding sealer first but this time I tried lacquer first as I sometimes do and it sucked it up like a sponge for the first couple coats before starting to build . Finally got five coats on and I have a little orange peel effect that I will buff out with the three stage Beal buffer after it cures for several days.

Oh yes, I tried a little practice with the texturing tool. This was my first trial without even practicing on scrap first. Did a little decoration on the rim and the foot.

William,
I really like this bowl. It shows off the beauty of Redwood. I like the texturing that you did around the rim and on the foot. The color is very nice and a good reflection of natural redwood. I live in Northern California on the coast and Redwood trees covers the hills all around the Bay Area. I love working with redwood, it is quite dusty and the dust can be very irritating so it is good that you wore dust protection.

I'm impressed William. First time with a new wood and tool and thats what you get? No wonder you are selling well. Keep up the good work and please keep sharing!

After posting the same pictures in my own site , Darrel informed me that the wood is from a stump of 500 year old growth redwood. I was so lucky to get a piece of that .

Was the texturing tool hard to get used to ? ? ? Not for those two areas I used it on. I didn't have a clue what I was doing. I just went at it and tried it. Got lucky I guess. I have heard they work best on hardwood but redwood is quite soft so I am now anxious to try it on some hardwoods.

That looks awesome!!

I've turn a small amount of Redwood. I have to say I'm very impressed. I really disliked working with it. Load of dust and tearout.

You make it look easy!
