I've made a few PR blanks (coffee bean, rotini, colored). I'd like to try wrapping some string/rope (someone had a really cool red, white, and blue one not long ago). I've noticed a few folks mention that they just "soak" it in CA instead of a PR or laminate. How is this done? Do you just pour CA glue on it? Use accelerator?
This is new for me so sorry for the ignorant questions and thanks for your help,
john

Mount your tube between bushings on the lathe. Place the end of the string on one end of the tube and apply a small drop of CA. Let it dry. Now wind one layer of string the length of the tube and saturate the layer with thin CA. Repeat winding another layer on top and soaking with CA. Repeat as many times as necessary to get the thickness of string you need.

I've done a number of glue-on pens in various materials including shredded money, carbon fiber, snakeskin, gunpowder, and thread. In each case, my basic approach was to glue the material on, turn it down (if necessary), build up CA until it's pround of the final diameter, and then turn it to shape. When doing the buildup, I use medium CA and accelerator, laying down several pretty heavy coats. I don't use thick as I find it may foam if applied too heavily.

If you're wrapping thread around a tube, I'd suggest that you paint the tube first, and start gluing a little bit away from the end of the tube. Wind the thread around several times, get it positioned, and wick a little thin CA onto the thread. Then wind further in each direction, wicking more thin CA on as you go. After you've reached both ends, fully saturate the thread with thin CA glue and let it cure. Then trim the ends, mount the tube between centers. and build up the finish.

I hope that helps,
Eric
