This knotty figure just appeared as I turned the bowl. 3 1/2" tall by 7 7/8" diameter.

The blank had a small "D" shaped 1/2" knot in the top and a heavy curl figure on the side. When I started turning, the curl disappeared and the knot emerged (complete with bug holes - I filled the bug holes with CA glue so that the bowl would be functional). As I hollowed out the bowl, the little knot moved slowly accross the bowl and turned out to be the other side of this large knot. I think that it was a branch that broke off then the tree grew around it hiding the knot.

Nice bowl. This is why, I like turning bowls out of one peice of wood, verses segmenting. You never know what you may uncover to enhance the beauty of a piece.

Dry butternut is a beast to turn. It chips and tears very easily. I think I spent more time at the grinder than I did at the lathe. However, it sands fairly well so the end result is pretty good. There are a few spots I am not happy with but I didn't see them until I applied the oil and wax finish.
