It appears that here in Florida they are going to have a hunting season for Burmese Pythons that are exploding in population numbers in South Florida. From what I have read so far, there are only about 20 people authorized to hunt them and they can only hunt on state-owned land, not federal land (like the Everglades). I read that they have to be killed as soon as they are caught but I wonder what will become of all that snake skin?

Send it to Dawn!!!! :) Thats a big snake with cool patterns... I don't know if the pattern is fine enough for a pen (might not get on a tube to see the whole pattern)... But man I'd love to see it!

She has tried casting python --- no matter who gets them, let me warn you, we have NOT found a reliable process, YET!!!!

Certainly would buy the skins for future use though, if they are available at a reasonable cost.

FWIW

Got a skin from Gary Max about a year ago and cast them, Made 3-4 pens from the castings the biggest problem I had was the seam. The skins are much thicker than rattlesnake or copperhead and the seams showed. I did sell them but made sure I showed the seam to the customers.

Nice work Roy ! When we get moved to Florida , I won't be snake hunting . But if I run into one , it's him or me .:biggrin:

Chuck,
I wouldn't worry about pythons, its the pygmy rattlers and water moc's that are a real buggers. Feel encouraged, they all turn out flat when hit by a truck tire.

I have a bout an 11 foot long skin I wish I could find a use for, A friend made a knife sheath out of a small section of the tail and I thought I was going to make a belt out of it but that's another never gonna get to it thing, this is a back cut skin so only the edges have the smaller scales, it's the kind boot makers use, got the big wide belly scales, but the hide really is too thick for pens, I like Cav's idea of doing a bowl with it.

You just lather a bunch of blood mixed with lard on your leg, then stick your leg down the hole. Once the snake gets up past your knee, you have 3-4 guys pull you out of the hole, and the snake comes with you. Then they have to pry it off your leg. It's quite interesting. It takes some serious pulling..doesn't hurt you, beyond perhaps a dislocated hip! They are quite thick for pens, but would make a heck of a wall piece.

 I could do that ! NOT !!!!

Why the heck would they have a limited number of folks authorized to hunt a non-native, invasive specie?? Everyone who sees one should be allowed to kill it.

After that moron with his python that killed the baby last week south of here, I'm for importation restrictions and door to door searches. Well maybe not that far, but definatly S.O.S rules for the critters.

I think we should also include the Nile Monitor Lizards that some fools have let loose as well. They can lay over 1000 eggs per year, and they eat any/all "small" game. There was a 6' one spotted a couple of months back and the new transplants to the area thought it was an alligator crossing the road.

Noodling is far more dangerous than baiting out a python with your leg. You'd be surprised how many people die Noodling, especially in Oklahoma. Many of the deaths are from drowning. It makes sense too. You swim down into 15-20 foot deep water, you stick your hand under a rock, find a 50 lb or more catfish, stick your hand in his mouth..well he clamps down on it..hey, that's how you get him out. But some of those fish are real big, and they don't just pull out easy. Now being deep in the water, and the fish won't come out, he's got a death grip on you, he's heavy, you can't make it back to the top to breath. Then there's the holes with snakes, alligators and snapping turtles in them. You don't exactly know what's in the hole till you stick your hand in there! 2 most important rules of Noodling..always have 2 other guys at your side in the water, and never stick your hand under a dry rock!
