I may be heading up to the NW part of California / SW Oregon next month. I hear there are roadside stands that sell burls in that area.

Do any of you know the area, and if so, can you tell me something about the stands, such as where approximately they are, and when they are open - weekends vs weekdays, and when they close for the season?

I guess for that matter, are their prices good? Know anything about what I might find up there?

Any information is appreciated.

David, sorry I can't help much with any specifics. We recently traveled US-101 down the Oregon coast and into California as far as Mendocino County on a motorcycle trip. All kinds of places selling redwood in that part of CA. On the old US-101 that is now "The Avenue of the Giants", there was a place specializing in burls...might have been in Weott? Oregon had Myrtle/Oregon Myrtle/Myrtlewood shops in almost every town the way it seemed. Beautiful country even if you don't find any burls!

There is a place in Cresent City called All Ways Redwood (or something like that) it is in what looks like a trailer park as you drive into the city from 101 from the south. They had LOTS of redwood slabs, maple, myrtle, and madrone. The prices weren't too bad, but the burls were quite a bit more expensive than the curly redwood and such.

There is a place in Gold Beach, about 50 miles north of Cresent City that sells bowls and other woodwork. They had some scrimshaw work that was just amazing. They sell mostly Myrtlewood products. This place is about 1/4 mile before you cross the bridge over the Rogue River on your left. I'm not sure if they sell slabs and such, so you will want to talk to them.

Aside from that - there is a place in Kerbyville called It's a Burl - he too specializes mostly in redwood burls. Kerbyville is about 50 miles east of Cresent City towards Grants Pass Oregon. The road between Cresent City and Grants Pass is a little narrow in places but is a really pretty drive.

Other than that - there are a few places in Klamath California on the side of the road that do Redwood carvings. I'm pretty sure they all sell blocks and burls.

I agree with Ron, Burl Country. They have a great selection, and their Buckeye and Redwood Lace burls are to die for. Forrest and Nathan are the guys to talk to. I have been dealing with them for a few years, and never got anything bad from them They are real straight shooters. Remember, you get only what you pay for.
