I have a question for all of the members that have made one of the Apollo (or Artemis) kits from Bullseye Turning Supply. I suppose I could have just PM'd Kate (KateHarrow), but I thought I would start by putting it out to the IAP membership at large.

I was just getting ready to make one of the kits, but nowhere in the instructions could I find anything about painting the inside of the blank (or the parts of the components that get glued in). I am planning on using some blanks that could have areas of translucency, so what you do or what do you recommend related to painting for these kits?

Regards,
Dave

Hi Dave,

I have made a few of these kits and really like them. Most of them have been with wood blanks, but one was a hybrid. In that case, I did back paint the blanks with black acrylic paint before using epoxy to glue in the Delrin cap sleeve and Stainless body sleeve. Even with the black Delrin cap sleeve, I worry that if I don't back paint, that I might see some irregularities in the epoxy. I think it turned out nicely. The blank is by Jacob Janssen Studios.

Just my two cents!

David

I have made quite a few of the Apollo and several Artemis using resin blanks (moistly DiamondCast and Bullseye blanks) and have not found a reason to paint the drilled holes. The inserts don't install the way brass tubes do -- i.e., the entire length of the pen barrel. I find the thinnest areas are where the inserts are absent. YMMV.
