Ive seen quite a few mentions of the Bubbasville get togethers and was wondering where the "chapters" are located. Is there one on the North East? If not is there any interest on a bubbahhasville with a yankee accent?

Sorry Phil .... Bubbasville is only for the most elite of the elite ..... only the most sophisticated of the sophisticated ....... it's a very exclusive club that is for the intelligentsia of IAP.

Qualifications for participation must be fulfilled by those wishing to participate. You must be able to demonstrate mastery of the following criteria before attending:

1. Using your most cherished Royal Purple Yew Blank, can you completely screw it up by mis-drilling?

2. When gluing the tube into the blank, are you able to have the ca dry so quickly that only 1/2 of the tube actually goes into the hole?

3. When turning the blank, are you able to move the tailstock up so tight that the mandrel actually bends?

4. When turning, how good are you at the highly delicate maneuver of over turning the blank where it meets at least one of the bushings?

5. When sanding, are you able to leave at least one sanding line for all the world to see?

6. When using a ca finish, how adept are you at holding the paper towel so tight up against the blank that you melt that blue nitrile latex glove right onto your fingertips?

7. Once finished assembling the pen, how accomplished are you at racing into the bedroom, where your wife has long been asleep, and then waking her up to show her the most beautiful pen ever made?

and finally,

#8. Have you NEVER had your name drawn by Weasel Bill and Mark in the IAP Trivia Contest?

If you can answer a resounding "yes" to at least one of the above .... Welcome to the Nearest Bubbasville!!
Congratulations!

The "Original Bubbasville" meets at Jeff Carrell's shop in Hurst, TX.

I created an eastern "chapter" in Maryland, Doc and others have had a get-together in the Atlanta area.

There is plenty of room for more chapters to form. Just pick a date and tell people where to show up. If you build it, they will come.

Joe

Golly, I am sorry that I am way out here in Utah because I can say YES to almost all of the above, and have never won anything.[8D]

Al,
you never fail to make me laugh, except for having the glue dry with the tube half way in I am guilty of all of the above. You left out the part about glueing your fingers together (My record is three at once).

I would love a chance to trade war stories with a bunch of fellow misfits I mean turners. If anyone else in the great white north east is interested in a gathering once the snow banks melt, speak up. My schedule is unpredictable but I'm sure I can set aside a day or two to host or help host a beer-b-que and bs session around the workshop.

Phil ... the original Bubbasville started in Texas. Many of us were envious because we couldn't attend. Then they started to spring up in a couple of other places like Bubbasvile East and Bubbasville Atlanta.
You ... yes, YOU, can try to get one started in your neck of the woods. A couple of tips on how to get it going:

1. Take a look at the membership map. You may find some IAP members real close to you.

2. Click on some of the usernames and see if their location is included in their personal profile.

3. Go to the Casual Forum and start a topic with a title like "Bubbasville Maine" or "Bubbasville New England" or something. Just ask if there is anybody within reasonable driving distance who would be interested in having a Bubbasville. At Bubbasville Atlanta we have people coming form TN (Julia) and SC (Bruce and Skye) .... 4 or 5 hours away.

You'll need to have a meeting place at somebody's shop that has enough room. Sometimes, that's not so easy to find. But, start talking it up and see who all is interested.

Good luck. If you're ever in the Macon area (OK, Atlanta) let me know.

Phil,
I like the idea of a Bubbasville New England. My schedule is a bit erratic but once the thaw finally hits I'd be game.

Oh, and for the record, my best effort to date is four fingers glued together at once, two from each hand. Plus a piece of batting all mixed in. Of course, no one home at the time, which is both good and bad. No one to help open the acetone but then no one to take pictures either.[:D]

PHil, i fyou feel like taking a long drive, the Bubbasville East get-togethers are always exciting! Well, at least it's as exciting as it can possibly get when you have 8-10 pen turners together at a farm in Eastern Maryland. All kidding aside, I went to my first meeting last month, and really enjoyed it. I plan on going again this month, and hope to make it a fairly regular outing. Joe's shop is HUGE, and all of the attendees bring a lot of knowledge and experience to the table.

Jim, thanks for the invite. It is a bit of a drive, I'm guessing 10+ hours. I'l keep an eye on the posts for dates and if I am down that part of the woods will definately make a side trip. My schedule is erratic at best and its hard to make plans but that definitly sounds like a fun get together.

Brad,
you've got me beat three was bad enough[:p]
Right now its a bit cold for outside gatherings and my shop is a bit small but I just got a used office trailer I'm converting so things are looking up. I'll start making a list of interested individuals and when warmer weather comes try to set something up. Maybe someone with a big shop will volunteer the space I'd be glad to bring cold wet refreshments. Oh and some pen related stuff.
