I got to see a Robert Sorby demo at the local Rockler today. The demonstrator, Chris, spent three hours showing how to use some of the coolest toys... er.... tools that come out of England!

But of all the things that he showed us, the thing that caught my eye the most was the piece of boxwood that he had brought with him from England. It certainly wasn't the most colorful or figured piece of wood I've seen, but, man! It was tight-grained and clear, and smelled soooo sweet when it turned! It looked like he was turning butter!

So, not only am I adding MANY Robert Sorby tools to my wish list, I've also added boxwood!

Boxwood is a great wood to turn and it takes to threading quite well.
Sounds like you enjoyed the day.
Do a good turn daily!

Boxwood is very nice to turn, Ive made a cigar pen in it before and turns very smoothly!

Can mostly buy it over here in log form, as the trunks never really get huge, more of a bush than a tree! When bought in the round though, you have to be careful of cracks!

Ill try and find a pic of the pen to post up here!

It is a very scarce wood. I'm told the finest comes from mountains in France. Dunno, that's what I was told.
I would like to find a source but that has proven difficult. There is American Boxwood but I haven't found any. I think Holly might come close in characteristics to Boxwood.

Roger...I will be attending Chris Pouncy Sorby tool demonstration March 2 here in Halifax at Busy Bee Tools. In the past, 30-40 people turn up and he puts on a great show. One has to restrain oneself from buying all those tools he demonstrates. It looks so easy. Lee valley used to sell branches of boxwood. I still have some in my stock and turn it on occasion. Very smooth to turn with a rich creamy color. Regards darrell
