Hi Friends,
I bought this as box elder burl 3 years ago and found one small spec of red (flame) in it. I have a couple of small pieces of buckeye burl, but it doesn't look like this, so my question is this:
Is this box elder? It has zero eyes, but some nice curl. I want to use it in my burl special this weekend, but I want to make sure I have it right. I have no experience with box elder, except for a few blanks that are still red.
Thanks,
Rob

Hello Rob
You are right as you bought it. Its box elder burl. I have had 100 pound burls that were fantastic with figure like what you have shown without a drop or spot of red on them. It is not Buck eye I have a few 1000 pounds of buckeye burls on had all the time and its not buckeye. I can tell that just by looking at the live ends. I hope this helps. Rod

I'd say the box elder claim is good. I have some with blue stain as well. If it was buckeye, I would say the blue would be darker.

The coloring looks like buckeye and the curl looks very nice, but it doesn't look like any buckeye burl</u> I have seen. Looks more like box elder with some mineral staining - rich iron soil?

Thanks guys,
Ilove the commeroderie (sp?) of you folks here, including the sellers, who are in essence competing with each other. Anyway, I have to agree with the concensus here. I have very limited exposure to buckeye burl, but it seems like it's more of a burly burl, rather than a curly burl and the grey seems darker.

Here's a pic of two pieces of buckeye burl, that look like elephants, along with the material in question.

The buckeye is slightly lighter in base white but the pen blank feels softer (finger nail test). I think that the blank is box elder. I guess the flame went out and it is left with the ashes. LOL[)]

The buckeye burl is compliments of my friend Bill, from Bubbasville East. It came from an intarsiaist.
Thanks for your help. It was good to hear from you guys. One more question. Is this gray a form of spalt?
Rob

It could easily be boxelder, but not burl. I have cut plenty of boxelders down and it is common to have curl in the wood. The burl has the crazy mixed up grain with plenty of 'eyes'. In my area it often has the red stain in it. I have seen some boxelder that is solid deep red.

Hey Rob If you send me your address off line I will send you a nice piece of buck eye so you can really tell the difference. Then you can cutt it up and make yourself some money off of it. Good luck with your weekend and the Box elder wood.

Thanks Rod

Thing is, I don't know who's the older dog, William or me. You've heard of Low48 (who graciously posted above), well I guess I'm "Wide 48". ;) Man, I hope that nickname doesn't stick. I'll be 49 in October anyway.
