I had heard about that lawsuit, and that the person had won. Not much else.

Wood mag posted some excerpts from the testimony here:

Reading the plaintiff's description of how he used the saw, if he had done ANYTHING correctly, he wouldn't have been hurt.

Splitter? Nope.
Guard? Nope.
Technique? Nope.
Saw at waist height? Nope.

Seriously. How the @#$%T^ could the injury be the fault of Ryobi? His employer or himself, absolutely.

I am willing to bet even if he had the Saw Stop he would have turned on the override for the moisture sensor while removing all of the other safety features! I can't believe this, I can see people going out and intentionally hurting themselves on their table saws just to be part of this lawsuit!

It just means that Table Saw manufacturers (and other saw makers) will have to make their saws such that the saw cannot operate without the blade guard, splitter, fence, etc. installed and in place.

The cost of table saws will rise and the ability exploit their use will diminish if you use it the way the manufacturer intended. People will still find ways around the "improved safety features" and will continue to use the table saw in the manner that it was used in this lawsuit. The cycle will continue to repeat itself until Government steps in and prohibits the use of table saws, or regulates them through the use of a license or permit.

The thing missing from this equation is Personal Responsibility...and there are people who think this is perfectly okay.

Just another example of our screwed up justice system. Be stupid and hurt yourself and blame and sue someone else.

You can't fix stupid!

I'd like to know why the company he was working for wasn't sued for removing the blade guard and thus giving the workers dangerous (defective?) equipment to work with.
