Hello everyone,

I haven't posted in quite awhile but I need some advice. I have a slab of black walnut 6+ feet by 15+ inches by 2 inches

( picture at end of post ) that I can't decide what to do with. My father and I cut down the tree more than twenty years ago and he made many projects out of the wood. He has since passed on and this is all that is left. I thougt about cutting it up into blanks and stopper blocks. Is there much demand for black walnut? I've also included some pictures of the wood that I turned for Christmas presents. Well guys, what do you think?

Walnut pen blanks are a dime a dozen unless they are crotch. The best thing for larger walnut is bowl blanks IMHO. They will get you the most for your investment of time and money. Even so, you will probably not be able to recoup your sentimental value.

Randall,
I agree with Bill; walnut blanks probably won't allow you to recoup your costs, let alone your sentimental value. What about making a small (or not so small) end or coffee table, or even a chair from it? This way you'll have something to remember him by. We have chairs in my office, which I'll be happy to photograph for you, which shouldn't require all of the wood in that board - especially if you use MDF or plywood under the padded sections.

BTW, nice job on the Christmas presents!

Something that size, resaw a portion for tabletop/aprons, and use the rest for legs for a end table or night stand. anything that's left, send to me, and I'll make something nice out of it[:D]

I think I'd make a table setting from it. Plenty there to do 4-6 plates and a full diameter platter. That would look great with some maple bowls and a maple salad bowl.

It will have way more sentimental value than monetary value. Make a picture frame with some of it and then frame something that has your dad's photo engraved on. Or, just have your dad's photo engraved on a piece of it and hang it in the house. Make sentimental items out of it. It sounds like it has a pretty good story to it.

Nice pants.[;)]

Think would keep it as a memento of both or a small project at most.

My 2 cents.

BTW I have a piece of cherry I bought from a Friend now deceased that I can not bring myself to use.

Piece is about 75 years old. 17"x6/4x7'

I'm with the people who are offering the sentimental ideas. It obviously reminds you of your dad. I tend to think in terms of a shadow box with mementos of him .... maybe a picture frame. On the other hand, that's a good size piece of wood. Maybe a book case or showcase of some sort to hold some of the special things that remind you of him?

Thanks for all your ideas. I was leaning to using the wood for bigger projects but just wasn't sure. My dad started a tradition of making gifts for Christmas for the grandchildren( my nieces ). Iv'e tried to continue that tradition. I hope my nieces don't get tired of walnut. Thanks again.
