Do you need this? No. Did I need this? No. I had this idea to make an expandable finishing bushing and that's what I did. Do I love it? Oh yeah!! I am going to make one for each tube size and this will be how I hold barrels for finishing. It runs perfectly true, super easy to get the ends of the barrel. The only downside is I'll have to have one for each tube diameter, not really a downside because I love making stuff like this. My son is also going to 3D print a set to see how that goes.

Ken, I need to know. Does the tapered end fit inside the 4-lobe end to expand it and thus tighten the plastic to the inside of the brasss tube?

I know you like to think outside the box and make jigs, but why something like this and not just 2 cone shaped ends? Basically how all is done now. I maybe missing something.

I have similar mandrels, mine end drilled and tapped for a tapered head screw and split in to quarters. Basically expanding lathe arbors. No tailstock needed.
I had to draw them for my son to 3d print them, which he hasn't yet.Looks cool Ken. I like that you even made prints for the pieces. Very engineery

What live centre do you have in the tailstock? Did you turn a morse taper on the end that goes into the tailstock?
It's a Oneway live center and I just turned the end of my insert to match the live center inserts.
