An artist member from our wood turning club initiated a fairly large project to memorialize a forest that backed up to her house and was being clear cut for development. Many of our club helped gather some of the trees are are making a variety of turnings for an exhibition along with other items inspired by the forest. Short version - done on a CNC

Long version - there are 60 rows, or 12 groups of 5. each line of pattern in the group of 5 is indexed either up or down. The next set of 5 is indexed lengthwise. The pattern itself is drawn as a graph and the points that generate the pattern are then coordinates that are used to generate the code fed to the CNC. There are tens of thousands of lines of code for this. Each line is cut with a .025" bit. Easy to replicate once the code is written but it took several days just to write the code.
