I hit the workshop today but chose to destruct instead of construct. I put a brand-new blade on the bandsaw and set to work cutting up every piece of wood I could find.

Nothing was safe, nothing was spared. My box of exotic (and domestic, yet interesting) wood is empty.... Nothing but sticks and dust remain.

Anyway, as I said a little earlier, Marc Ruby sent me a set of cole jaws for my Supernova2 chuck. All he asked for was the cost of shipping to be reimbursed, either in cash or blanks. I chose to send blanks because they're much more interesting than money, dontcha think?

The only catch is that I wanna have a little fun with this, so here's the deal: As soon as Marc can identify EVERY piece of wood in the little batch of blanks I cut up, I will send them to him.

So, here ya go Marc. Have at 'er. You have unlimited "call a friend" privileges here on the forum. You have until noon Sunday, else the deal is void.

Go!

Hint: ONE of the pieces is "Pisa Tubifor" (you have to guess which one though)

heh heh

Cheers!

Must be nice to have a good band saw, I Haven a working Lathe again 140.00 for two gears that I could have nade at school or paid one of the kids 20 bucks a lunch at Micky D's and been done, But schools out till tomorrow, Geezs I love cutting 1/2 inch 4140 with a hacksaw and no decent vise, in the rain, only have another 30 pieces to cut,, I guess I shouldn't complain, iI got to make 9 pens this week end, 7 of them turned out nice, 2 are give aways, Oh Well.

There is a couple that caught my eye and both are on the upper right quadrant.
The (1) black and white w/ natural edge and (2) possibly a curly koa?

Dario,

Shhhhhhhh... Don't tell Marc but the black and while piece you see is one of a few pieces of African Blackwood.

The piece next to it (to the right) I will admit right here and now that I don't have a clue. There's another piece of the same in the bottom/right. These two have some wax on 'em and that's why they look so wild. You can see the natural edge on the piece next to the Blackwood as well, and there are a couple of more chunks in the pile...

Lessee what else is in there... Some Ebony, Bocote, Amboyna Burl, Bloodwood, Black Walnut, Cocobolo, Jatoba, Lacewood, and a few more that I can't remember.

I'll put up a close-up or two, including of the one that you mentioned might be Koa.

Cheers!

The obligatory Amboyna Burl:

I should have used better lighting and such, as these photos are crappe.

Anyways, anybody know what that mystery piece is?

Cheers!

I looks like I completely missed this. Well, let's see. There' some red wood, and some white wood, and some brown wood and I think I see to yellow and black. This makes it easy, it's Confetticus Canadiensus often referred to commonly as scrapwood. An interesting feature of the wood is that it defied most normal methods of identification since no matter what part you grab, it's different.

Dario's mystery piece looks suspiciously like claro walnut. Crosscut.

Works for me! :)

I'll pick out a selection of choice pieces (which is to say that I'll CHOOSE to keep the good stuff for myself and CHOOSE to send the crappe to you (grin)) and get 'em in the mail.

Cheers!
