Here is how I turned and finished it:

Trimmed barrel using Rick Herrell's sanding disk barrel trimmer
Used HSS roughing gouge for 90% of the turning
Then completed the turning with HSS skew with an Lacer profile
Dry sanded in reverse from 400 to 2000 (abranet to 800, then Norton's SP to 2000 grit) at 900 rpms
On a buffing wheel progressed from Tripoli, white diamond, then two more finer compounds
Removed any light compound dust with Novus 1 on a cotton t shirt
Followed by a thin coat of Rejex synthetic wax.
Then assembled.

This is a PSI Fly Fishing pen. The blank is made by me. I'm calling it one of my PHISH SKINZ blanks. The blank consists of all man made materials and is patterned after a rainbow trout.its cast in PR resin.

Pen 4

The pen I am submitting is a gunmetal finish Compson Click ballpoint pen.

I constructed the blank from a pair of my old blue jeans. The jeans were disassembled and cut into 4x5 inch patches. Each patch was saturated with epoxy resin (West System with slow hardener) and stacked one on top of the other into a plastic mold. Pressure was applied to the mold with 6 C clamps. After 24 hours the compressed stacked denim block was removed from the mold. Two days later the denim blank was cut from the block.

The blank was squared on a bandsaw. The blank was then cut to length on the bandsaw as well. The center hole was drilled on the lathe at a slow speed with frequent stops to prevent heat buildup. A 7mm brass tube was glued into the center hole. The blank was end squared on the lathe as well.

The blank was turned using Rockler carbide turning tools with frequent stops to prevent heat buildup that would melt the epoxy. The end of the blank was saturated with CA glue to prevent breakdown of the denim. Once the desired shape was obtained the blank was hand sanded to achieve an even color and fiber consistency. After the sanding was done the blank was finished with 4 coats of thin CA and 8 coats of medium CA. The blank was wet sanded up to 12000 grit and polished.

The pen was assembled in the traditional manner using an arbor press.

This was the first blank I made. I cast PR with pearl pigment powders (blue purple and silver) and allowed to set at room temperature.
I turned it and polished it on a buffing wheel. I know its not fancy, but it is the first one I completely made from scratch.

Pen 6

Long time lurker, last year I made myself the promise to get the gut to register to the IAP and submit some entries to the next bash event. Well, here I am

Kit used: Fancy cigar pen (from Cook Woods)

Description: The wood is cocobolo crotch wood. The pen was turned with the corresponding bushings, sanded to dimension, checked for dimensions before applying a CA finish, followed by polishing with micromesh.

Pen 7

The pen is a Titanium gold Perfect Fit in Buckeye burl. Probably my favourite ballpoint because of size and feel of transmission.

Pen was turned between centers sanded to 1500 grit then a CA finish applied. 2 layers of thin then 4 layers of medium. Pen was then wet sanded with 1500 grit to remove any bumps and hollows left by the CA application. Polished with HUT plastic polish then buffed on Beal buffing system.

This is a 30 cal bolt action pen kit in 24kt gold. The wood used is mango, which I segmented with purple heart and aluminum. Finished with CA and a final polish given with One-Step.

Pen 10

Thanks for running the ballpoint pen contest! Attached are 3 photos of my 24kt gold Spartan Click Pen. The blank is a black and white Colorply pen blank given to me by a friend who was clearing out some old supplies. Turned with carbide tools on my Jet 1221, sanded to 600 grit and finished with a dozen coats of CA glue.

Pen 11

The pen is a titanium and platinum cigar
First I cast the blank in Alumilite with mica powders.
I then spiral segmented the blank with aluminum flashing and thin black plastic.

Pen 12

The Antique Bronze Cigar hardware is dress in an Acrylic Blank cast by one of our IAP members. A "special" ingredient used really sparkled in the sunlight, but was difficult to capture in the photos. Turned most of the way with a Magical Skew, near the end switched to a small carbide with 2" radius, and final turning was with a HSS 1" skew in a scraping position. Quick touch with micro-mesh, and buffed to beauty!!

First time turning that blank material, so I was concerned--but it really cooperated nicely...and the result was quite pleasing.

Pen 13

This is a octagonal pen I made from mahogany and a Big Ben cigar pen kit. The tubes were shaped by hand planing the flats after turning the ends to the kit bushings.

Pen 14

Majestic Squire kit in TG gold and Black titanium
The blank is a piece of Walnut cribbing timber used for the New Berlin covered bridge built in 1878.
It has been finished with BLO & CA and then polished and buffed.

Pen 15


This is a Southwest Antique Pewter Kit from PSI. The pen is made from Desert Ironwood and has bands of real crushed turquoise with metal rings inlaid into the turquoise.

Pen 16

An antique copper Cowboy pen kit from PSI was used to make this pen. The body is a diamondback rattlesnake skin caught on our own property. It is cast in a clear polyester resin, turned, sanded, and then polished on a buffing wheel.

Pen 17

The kit used is a 30 cal bolt action black enamel. The barrel is made from the molten metal acrylic inlace. The inlace was turned down using traditional HSS Tools to an almost finished diameter then sanded the remaining diameter, wet sanded through all micromesh pads and buffed to end.

But on the first page or top of any page in this thread there is a poll set up. Click on 3 different pens if you have chosen 3 then click vote on bottom of the poll. Simple as that. Again not sure with the App thing.

Go to the IAP sight from a laptop or desk top. Log into the homepage and click on contest votes. Go to the contest you want to vote for. It is fairly self evident from there.

I does not work with the cell phone app. At least it has not in the past for me.

this was one the first three that I turned when I got the Lathe and all the tooling with several kits for a sweet Lady who Husband has passed she put it on Craig's list, this Steam Punk is smooth but a little heavy, will do that style again, Pen Joe
