Pen 3

Kit used: Steam Punk Bolt Action
dressed with an Acrylester Vivid Gold Rush Blank and finished it with a three step system:
"Flitz Polish"
"Meguiars PlastiX"
"Huts Ultra Gloss Pastic Polish"
I would use a new soft cloth for each step. Each step would include a wipe length wise of each blank, then turn the lathe on and put on another coat of each product, after that, I used another clean soft cloth with the lathe on, and wipe each coat off....the is no need to buff

Pen 5

Kit used: Chrome CSUSA Artisan Clicker
I chose the clicker kit due to the long body and design opportunity. The blank started as an El Mostro alumilite blank. I cut 13 even pieces from it and used 12 pieces of aluminum to segment (Happy 12th IAP!) it is a simple design yet challenging due to the exactness of the tube and the clicker kit gives no room for error.

Pen 6

Kit used: European style twist pen kit
As far as the blank, there was really nothing too special. Its was a nice piece of clear hard maple. The challenge was to get the cross to start and stop in the right place once the pen was turned. I added a red band in the middle of the pen to complement the red cross... and that I don't really like the bands that come with the pen kit.

Pen 7

Kit used: WallStreet 2 in Black Titanium
Pen has a Maple Burl center, surrounded by curly Walnut. Pedals/Scallops are made from white Corian and a Navy/Purple with white spec Corian round out the top and bottom. Aluminum sheeting is used to separate each of the materials. Finish is with CA Glue polished to 12k grit.

Pen 8

Kit used: Gearshift antique pewter kit from PSI
I wanted to pair this pen kit to a wood that exuded class and luxury. I chose this dark wood. After turning it, I sanded to 600, then I went to micro mesh to 12000. I didnt want too much of a shine as I preferred to have a warmer, deeper, richer finish on the wood, so I simply used Hut crystal polish and put about 10 coats on.

Pen 10

Kit used: SPW Royale in Gun Metal
This pen is made up of 227 pieces and lots of CA. I first split a blank both ways and sandwiched a piece of plastic sandwiched between two pieces of wenge veneer. I then turned it round and drilled for the tube. I cut slices off the rounded blank and glued them on the tube, slightly twisting and alternating between slices of the blank and red plastic cutting sheet material.

Pen 11

Kit used: Celtic
I used a stabilized & turquoise-dyed box elder blank from PSI for this pen. I made my own bushings from delrin then used a carbide turning tool to shape the blank. The blank was sanded through 12000 micromesh and finished with 4 coats of thin CA.

Pen 12

Kit used: Hybrid Cigar - Black Ti/Platinum
This pen was made from a 50 cent comic book from the used book store. The top part of the blank is formed of glued (then stabilized) layers of the comic book. The bottom blank was made by fixing/rolling the comic book directly to the tube. The bottom blank has a lot of depth, and i thought i was really lucky to actually see the dialog boxes - one containing 'Thor' - which this was a Thor comic book (1998 #1 Heroes Return).

Kit used: Gatsy by PSI
This is a Thin Blue Line Pen made for fellow Law Enforcement. The kit is from PSI and the blank is an Alumilite blank from Zac Higgins over at NVWoodwerks.com. Thanks Zak! The pen is sanded to 12k MM, then polished with Hut Ultra Gloss.

Pen 16

Kit used: Cigar
For this pen I chose a simple, yet elegant piece of lightly spalted live oak. I used a chrome Cigar kit and a light, satin CA finish help to show off and highlight the beautiful, interlocking grain and very light, scattered spalting in this piece of wood.

Pen 17

Kit used: Tec-7 Twist Pen from PSI
Blanks were cut from an Oregon Big-Leaf Maple, from a highly figured burl section. All the details on this pen are naturally occurring, nothing was added to the wood. Blanks were turned, sanded to 1500 grit, stained with natural (basically colorless) wood stain, finished with cyanoacrylate, and polished with micromesh to 12000 grit. Touch stylus option that came with the kit was used instead of an end cap.

Pen 18

Kit used: PSI Vertex Click Pen Kit
I like the simple lines and smooth operation of the Vertex Click. I also like the use of bird feathers to make a blank. The intricate patterns in the feathers are very attractive. I bought a Mixed Feather blank made by JohnU (member) which had been designed and made for a different pen kit. I added a piece of wood (Lignum Vitae) to each end of the blank so that it would fit the Vertex. No modifications were made to any part of the Vertex pen kit and all parts were used.

Kit used: Cigar in Chrome finish
The wood is Padauk with black and white plastic accented with aluminum flashing. The wide stripe is some 1/4" leather I had laying around. I used CA for my finish. If you like orange dust everywhere Padauk is the wood for you.

Kit used: Artisan Aero Chrome/Black Titanium
I used tube in casting, painting the tube with nail polish, then using small round embellishments, made the pattern on the blank. I cast in Silmar 41 to finish it out. Then the usual, turned, finished, and assembled the pen.

Pen 24

Kit used: Satin Copper Cigar
This eight-loop Celtic knot started with an oversized (nearly 1") cherry blank milled to an octagon. The segments in the loop were constructed of colored veneer; a gray strip was sandwiched between two white strips, which then was sandwiched between two burgundy strips. The eight-loop knot was constructed just like a four loop knot, except there are eight kerf cuts referenced off of the octagon faces in a 1, 5, 3, 7, 2, 6, 4, 8 order. The pin stripes were made from the same veneer as the knot material. The kerfs were ripped the length of the lower barrel blank to a depth just short of the diameter of the brass tube. The finish was CA, and the plating is satin copper.

I liked the yellow and black colors and the black pen kit complimented the yellow to such an extent, it was impossible not to make. It spells style and is timeless in a modern and technology age.

Pen 27

Kit used: Liberty
This pen uses Ebony wood as a base. I turned the wood down a bit past the bushings, sanded it and cleaned it. Then made a design in pencil on it. I painted it with acrylic paints and finally finished it with applying colored pencil to give it some depth. The wood shows through around the design so you get to appreciate both the wood and design. Finally sealed it and put a CA finish on it to protect the design and used micro mesh and water to smooth it out and finally I buffed it to a shine.

Pen 28

Kit used: SPW LE ROI ROYALE IN RHODIUM
"All inlace with a little copper." Love to turn inlace acrylester, which I know some people hate. Wanted to do something with all the cut-offs so I glued up a bunch of segments separated by 0.025" copper sheeting, drilled out for the tube, then turned. Actually turned nicer than a straight piece of inlace, probably because I took my time with the copper segmenting. Thanks for looking!
