I have a slow speed grinder from Woodcraft I bought a couple of years ago along with a Wolvering jig. I'm in the process of setting it up again (reading the directions this time :)). I noticed that the wheels have a significant side to side wobble when I spin them by hand. I recalled seeing a wheel balancing gizmo from Oneway. Does anyone know if that would help with the wobble? Is the wobble that big of a deal to begin with? Ideally it wouldn't be there but I'd prefer not to spend money if I don't have to. It seemed to grind ok, I just had the jig set up (completely) wrong.

Thanks a bunch.

I have the same grinder, with the same problem. But the imbalance isn't significant enough to worry about. I have a diamond dressing tool that I use to take care of some of the out of round. But, I'm not worried about it for now as good wheels are a bit pricey and out of my budget range for now. I don't think it runs long enough to damage anything, so I just ignore it.

Mike, a sideways 'wobble' is not really an unbalanced problem. Some may even say that it is a good thing, as the tool being sharpened is never in the same place on the stone. This cannot be fixed with a dressing tool. If the wheel is unbalanced, it generally means that the outside surface of the stone is eccentric to the centre. If the wheel is unbalanced, you would invairably notice vibration while it is running. Dressing stones is normally done when the grinding surface has depressions in it after sharpening small narrow things like drill bits. Attempting to dress the side of a stone can be very dangerous.
On a slow speed grinder, even unbalance shouldn't be too much of a problem.
Good luck

Fantastic! That's exactly what I was hoping to hear.[:)] I suspected, based on the manual for the wheel balancer, that the wobble I have was not the same as what balancing fixes. I figure I'll probably buy the wheel balancer eventually, after I learn how to sharpen properly and get some better wheels.

Thanks again everyone!
