For those that use bakelite......have you used SemiChrome Polish? If so, how do you like it. I've heard that you can use it to test suspect items to see if they are actual bakelite.....

TIA,

Barney

Never have used but have used 409:

Method #1: Some Bakelite collectors recommend the 409 Test. Here's how to do it:
  1. Dip a cotton swab in 409 household cleaner and touch a small area of the piece, such as a back that won't be visible when worn.
  2. If the piece is vintage Bakelite, the accumulated patina will show up as a yellow stain on the cotton swab.
  3. Rinse the cleaner off the tested spot right away.
Method #2: Some collectors recommend you place the Bakelite in hot water, then remove and sniff. Warmed Bakelite smells like camphor.

Semi-chrome is my second favorite finish for Bakelite. My first favorite is Flitz, My third favorite is Brasso.

Flitz in my first choice because it is simply cheaper and easier to find here than Semi-chrome. Flitz can be bought on the cheap at the grocery store. Semi-chrome here comes from the Harley Shop and they are proud of it. Brasso works well, is easy to get, but makes the pen stink for days.

In a pinch, Never-Dull Aluminum Wheel cleaning pads work well, just do NOT let the "wool" get wrapped around the spinning pen blank.
