The powers that be gave me permission to use my new lathe, actually any thing other than my Mill has been off limits since the 2nd or third of January, I have around 20 Fountain pens to do, and I really want to try some bowls and or platters, that was the reason to get the new lathe to beginwith, after supervising and doing a little digging I only dug when the other guys needed a break (we dug almost 140 ft of waterline, to find the frozen area, I was soooo stupid, we have been near zero for over a week and when we got warm up all the way up to 25 over night I didn't think we needed to run water, (can you say Dumb A$$) sure you can, :embarrassed: I have never seen the ground freeze over an inch or two, well this time it was froze almost a foot deep, and there was a washed out area that the water line was only down about 3 or 4 inches due to erosion from all the rain we had last summer. we've been with out water since early Tuesday morning untill last night, we still haven't back filled the trench, it filled with water, we finished in a pouring rain, my shoulder still hurts, but I did exactly what the Dr. said (for once) one or two more steroid shots, and MILD excersisze he thinks it will be OK with out surgery, if I don't get stupid. which for once I'll put forth the effort not to get dumb, which is hard for me.
So I have some blanks from Curtis and a special kit from Constant for my wife, being the sweet kind and loving spouse, she will allow me two hours turning time, but no lifting.
As much of an inconvenience as being with out water, (I had to fetch it by the bucket) from my daughters about 200 feet away, I honestly cried a bit watching CBS Sunday morning, and the tragedy in Haiti.
My wife and I were so up set at something so trivial as our crisis of no running water against the loss of life, and injury plus having your children die in your arms the difficulty getting the most vital items Water, Food, Medicine, watching that this morning really put that in perspective, I have it sooo easy it's ridiculous, yet still whine about the trivial misfortunes ( caused by my own stupidity), while an entire Nation struggles in a nearly hopeless situation. I pray that God lifts his mighty hand and spares as many of them as he can, and the Drs. and Medical support teams all come home safely.

Sorry to hear about the situation with no water. Really makes one think about how easy we have it here where such an essential thing as water is readily available. Glad that you are allowed to turn a little bit and hope that your shoulder continues to recover.
I agree with you that situations like Haiti really put life in a proper perspective. I think that I am so lucky to have my health, even with my recent traumatic brain injury, my family, a home, food to eat, heat and a community of friends. I think that our culture often loses track of the important things and it gets caught up in the gimmies. Thank you for crying and allowing yourself to have feelings about humanity's tragedies. I think it allows us to feel more connected to each other. Life is too short and it is so important to cherish each other each day. I am glad that relief is starting to reach the victims of Haiti and that so many MDs and RNs are arriving to help those in need.

Ken,
Sorry to hear about the frozen line... that does get to be a pain, and I hate to dig water lines... when we first moved in here, the main line from the meter to the house had a leak, insisted the realtor fix that as it was existing when we bought, then in rapid succession, I dug 3 different leaks... finally just called someone with a ditch witch and dug up the entire 90 feet and put down new pipe... it was summer and the ground was so hard, we went through two ditch witches... we broke one with about 5 feet to go to finish the trench. The young plumber said "I just dig it by hand"... his maddox bounced and nearly jumped back in his face on the first swing... he went for another digger.

Right now I have a small leak under the house, but it's just been too cold to go under there and the wife has insisted I wait for a while until I'm fully healed from the surgery I had the last of Sept.... I keep telling her I'm sure I'm healed, but she's insistent that I wait...
