Well I was out to the shop this weekend Just for an hour on Sat and Sun. After 2 months of in the house watching TV and reading every post on IAP I was able to bore some blanks. I got a new drill press for Christmas and just had to try it out. My old one only had a travel distance of 1 3/4. The new one is 2 3/4 Makes drilling so much faster. Didnt fire up the lathe. I just ran out of steam. Maybe tomorrow. I have to be careful I'm on blood thinners for a blood clot in my lung.
Christmas Eve I went and had my port put inmy chest for my chemo so hopefully I will get that started soon. I keep losing weight and I need to gain weight. But with a stomach that is only 40% the size it was before its hard to gain.
So keep up the posts. Its keep me busy and form going crazy. I have bought alot of blanks from members in the last 2 months and really want to get back to the turning. I'm already get a order ready for the CSUSA Group Buy.
I still have the rough part (chemo)to go but with god and everyones prayers I will be ready for the summer shows. Thank You Everyone I tell my self to keep positive.

P.S Does anyone know of anyone that has Esophageal Cancer ? Would really like to talk to them about what they are dealing with. Thanks

Rich H.

Tell me about those blood thinners. I am on them for another month after my surgery and every little cut I get bleeds forever even with applying pressure. I got back out in the shop the other day for the first time in a very long time. Turned 2 pens then the belt on my lathe took a dump. I have to wait and see if they show up in the mail tomorrow and try and get the new one on without breaking anything.

Hi Rich,
Sorry to hear about the cancer. But I know they can do amazing things now. I've had friends with cancer of pancreas, or of stomach and like that but not esophogeal cancer. Both of my friends are still alive well past the 5 year mark. But it wasn't an easy road. Take it a bit at a time and ease yourself back in to things.

When you are at the lathe, are you standing all the time? I haven't been able to do that. I do all my turning sitting at my lathe on a cut down table. Doesn't take so much out of me - although I do get tired.

Rich,
You an I do not know each orher but I feel compassion for anyone in need. You may have some good times and some not so good but what is good to do, make your turning bench comfortable for you to work at then.......just get lost in your shop turning as many pens as you can, try different designs. Soon all your thoughts will be on your work.Let us see some of the things you are doing, it will give you a good feeling. Then keep doing it each day

Hi , Well I will be standing for now. I do want to get a shorter table for my lathe. Just have to figure out the measurements. Thanks for your ideas Rich H

Rich, I want to echo the "take it easy" advice. The chemo will likely tire you out even more, so be careful. Have you considered using a stool at the lathe? After my knee surgery, some wonderful friends bought me one and it helped me get back into turning while standing was difficult.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Just a suggestion for those of you on blood thinners. wear a couple of layers of latex gloves. the surgical type of glove. it will save you from a ton of little scrapes etc. they do not stand up to rugged use and will not protect you from really bad stuff like razors and sharp pocket knives. but those little bumps and scrapes that you get all the time seem to catch the glove and not get to your skin.
