Hi Folks,
Well, we're back from Hawai'i and I managed to get a nice cache of wood while I was there. My wife was a really good sport about it too. Here are some pics. We forgot our camera battery recharger, so all of the "while there" pics are non-digital. These are what I took when I got back and charged up the battery.

Curly Koa (some for bottle stoppers, but mostly for pen blanks:

We had a great time exploring the island and even had one of the art gallery shop owners offer to buy my pens, when I showed him one of my mango euros. That was pretty cool, since he already had two turners. I have to admit, that mine had a much nicer fit and finish, which is probably why he asked me to make pens for his shop. I'm going to do it.

I saw some incredible curly koa furniture there, but like I said, the pics are all non-digital.

Thanks for looking. Enjoy the pics.

Your wife allowed you to leave a whole bunch of clothes behind so you could fill up the suitcase with wood??? ;);)

Sounds like you had a great trip ..... we're happy for you BigRob.

By the way .... when you talked about a gallery wanting to buy your pens ..... first thing that came to my mind was "Hawaii Trip - Business Deduction".

:D:D

Al,
I brought an empty duffle bag, inside of my bigger suit case. I was going to ship some of the wood home in a large flatrate box, but it was mostly too large and I would have to use the extra duffle bag anyway. I should have gone with my first idea, but I had no idea how much my cases weighed. I ended up having to toss out a 6 pound chunk of the Kiawe, which had some nice curl in it, as 3 of my cases were overweight. I had to then reshuffle all of the bags, there at the airport. That's what wiped out my back, but I'm already able to stand straight today and walk without pain.

I have a huge order to start (the 2nd biggest of my career) and it looks like I can start it today. Wahoo! Or to you Hawaii buffs, "Ono".

OK, I'm a fisherman and the biggest fishery in Hawaii is Wahoo, or as they call it, Ono.[:p]

I planted a garden, before I left and now I get to see what survived. I loves dem maters.

PS. You can bet I'll be checking with my accountant about any deductions on my taxes as well. BTW, the bottom left koa is a stack of 30 veneer sheets that are about 4" X 16", or so and cost only fifty cents apiece. The curl doesn't show up in the pic too well, as it's curly all over. It's what I call light curl though. All of the koa in the pic was curly as well.

One thing that I noticed at one of the art galleries (we visited about 15 of them all together), was a sofa made of red palm. There were quite a number of items made from that material, which was good for me, as I bought a shop full of it two years ago. I think I'm going to try to make up some light switch plates with it. Business card holders that fold closed, were the number one use for it. I was so inspired, that it drove me nuts, not being able to build anything on vacation.

If I can manage to "sew" the pieces of koa veneer together, I'm going to make a coffee table with it and red palm too. Wood and snorkelling and exploring and the awesome beauty of nature are my favorite aspects of Hawai'i. Replace wood with shopping and you get my wife's favorites.
