Just got in from Duluth...

Allowed to spend 400, and ended up at 399.51, so I cut it about as close as I could get...

Dissapointed that HF didn't have much...about half of what I scouted out on line to buy...didn't get a pressure pot, or the dust collector either...

Also, it was a bit shocking to see that you can still smoke indoors in a lot of places in Duluth! Not used to that concept! And daytime running lights aren't mandatory on new cars down there, apparently!

Anyway, it was fun, but glad to be home!

Hi Andrew..where the heck do you hail from anyway?? They let ya smoke in Duluth??? Yikes, freedom rings!!!! I live about 100 miles north of Duluth..never go there except for surgeries...Big cities annoy me...oops, just saw you are down from canada..no wonder you were surprised ..hope you enjoyed your short sprint to freedom!!!

Not a smoker myself, actually...just surprised that they allowed it in the casino. 100 miles north? Virginia or Eveleth? I ski in Buwabik from time to time...

Nice little trip, but glad to be home too! Sure are nice people in MN, as long as you're not driving! I kept getting honked at for letting people in to parallel park in front of me...perhaps I should have hit them? THe driving part was a bit stressful, but I'm not used to Interstates and the different style of merge lanes you have - key seemed to be to gun it while looking over your shoulder - scary!

Andrew

andrew, casinos will never be touched by the anti-smoking laws. too much money being dumped into the government for them to go messing with it. but oddly, where there's no government interest, they are happy to regulate that sort of thing. i personally don't mind as a non-smoker but it's just funny how they won't even try with casinos.

driving sucks here...

not surprised at all to hear about HF not having half the stuff you wanted. it happens all the time. too many people go there and there's a lot of variability between what stores carry...

come back and see us again!

I'll come back as often as the pocketbook allows...I don't really realize how expensive stuff is in Canada until I take a trip down to the states...even gas is cheap!

The only thing that ISN'T cheaper is the food - about the same price as up here, and apparently your servers don't make very good money - which makes for better service! In Canada, they make about seven or eight bucks an hour, and THEN expect 20 percent....not the case down there, from what I can figure out. Up here, tips are expected, but not often deserved...not the case down there!

Andrew,

You need to venture a couple more hours to the south. Lots of good places to shop for tools and supplies in the Twin Cities. Seven Corners Hardware in St. Paul is a must-see. The HF stores here seem to be well-stocked too. There are a few Rockler stores and a Woodcraft in town. Give me a shout if you ever plan to head this way.

BTW, the reason the casinos aren't smoke-free is that they are subject to federal jurisdiction, which prevents the state smoking ban from applying to them.

Cheers.

I'll have to plan a trip down south again - the big city was too far for this trip, though..not sure I could handle Minneapolis though - the interstates in Duluth were stressful enough for me! THey don't give you much warning for those off-ramps, eh? Nor do they tell you which side the ramp is on! [:p]

Understandable - traffic here gets worse all the time. If you come down on a weekend (and give me a heads-up), you can park your car and I'll take you around town. Any excuse for me to visit a few favorite haunts. :D I live in the northern 'burbs, just a few miles off I-35W - you don't even have to venture much into the city traffic to reach my place if you are coming from the north. The invite is open.

Cheers.

Ditto on Twin Cities metro traffic....I'm just here over a year and the "Minnesota Merge" still makes me cringe, I imagine most of the traffic deaths in eastern states are folks from here who think when they enter the highway they have the right of way....if you time a trip right you can avoid the rush hour(s) and Duluth isn't that far away and WWAtty is right, some great shopping for the man toys here, HF is less than three miles from me here in the northern burbs.....

Just a quick top on US driving: The big green exit sign has a small green exit number sign on top. If the small sign on top is on the left side, the exit is on the left, on the top right - the exit is on the right.

Glad you made it back.

Chris

Chris..really?? The signs are on the left and right and mean that??? I never noticed..Of course I've only been driving for over half a century, but still, thanks for the NEW info...
