Running multiple virtual machines can come in very handy.

I use VMWare not MS version. I allows me to test new software on any number of different operating systems without junking up my PC. If you mess anything up you hit the revert button and you can jump back to any saved snapshot of your machine you have made in the past.

It also allows you to run things that would not otherwise be compatible with each other without having to have another machine.

And that is just the workstation stuff, when you move to virtual servers a whole new bunch of options open up.

I prefer VMWare myself and use it. Lots of software will run on a *nix platform O/S, so with VMWare you can run Microsoft and RedHat (or your *nix flavor of choice) on the same machine.

Vmware works a lot better. The new 6.0 beta is fantastic with dual monitor support. 5.5 adding in the Team framework made my life a lot easier. We use Vmware workstation & ESX server, Virtual PC, and Pear PC. Having used them all, Pear PC is the biggest resource hog and VMware is the most robust. VirtualPC is good for building and testing Embedded XP images. JMHO
