There is an article in the Reference Library called Realistic Cigar V2 (Improved) by Bill Bettag (Wood Butcher) from Indiana that I think will give you a good idea of how to do it. Bill was very active on IAP until his passing on 21-Dec-2018. - Dave

So this thread asked the same question. He used unstabilized buckeye burl, a diamond wheel on the dremel, and a woodburner to give texture and darker bits of "ash". He has done a couple excellent quality faux cigar pens.

I use a Dremel tool a make small lines around Buckeye Burl. Then I use a wood burning tool to burn in and around the cuts. The next thing is I use sandpaper to lightly sand the burn area until I get the look I want.
