On todays AOL.COM theres an article on the top 25 things to go extinct.
Many of the twenty five are a given, such as outhouses, yellow pages, and want ads. We all know the age of electronics is going to make a lot of things obsolete. However, I was a bit taken aback by number nine on the list. The written letter one day will go away. With all the doom and gloom being reported about the economy, war, social security and what not. One more gloomy item to bring us down. Don't believe it People. Have faith that man will never lose the written language. Its funny that as I rant on the placing on the top 25, I'm typing my rant on the very thing that the list predicts will make writing letters go extinct. Is this somewhat of an oxymoron? Anyway heres the link. Thanks for letting me go off.:confused::confused:

I'll bet the written letter follows the paperless office. We've been hearing about the paperless office for decades and don't see it going paperless anytime soon. In fact I think there is a certain nostalgia to writing a personal letter in this electronic age. I might be way off base with this one, but I wouldn't be surprised if we see a slight comeback of the custom writing instrument. Of course the economy might crush that thought into nothing.

Some of my customers look at my work as much art as a quality writing instrument and I'm sure many of you have similar experiences. I have a group of attorneys that are very much into portraiting a certain image. Many of them are into outfitting their offices with high quality antique office furniture. Many times, furniture with a history behind it. These guys love expensive hand made wood pens sitting on their beautiful desks. A few could care less and they keep a box of Bic's in their desk drawer, but not many.

This is just my morning pre-coffee rambling so maybe I'm not awake yet and slightly delousional. Just my thoughts.

Ditto. I think there will be plenty of paper in our future and I sit behind a computer for 10 hours a day.

The thing to remember is; What would you rather get, a letter from someone hand written, or a letter from someone printed out? A hand written one every time, right? So, if for no other reason, I think that even if handwriting decreases, the need for high end pens will stay about the same.

I work in the medical profession. I have seen the advent of "electronic charting and electronic medical records", one thing I know to be sure, the amount of writing I do has not gone down. I doubt I will ever see the day when someone wouldn't love to write something with a custom made pen.

In some ways it has merit IMHO.

Ages ago...when I was still in school, we were trained/taught to write nicely. Nowadays, I am lucky if I find a school who cares as much. I had classmates who can write so nice it almost looks like type written! They show pride with their "work"...try finding those now. My own handwriting itself deteriorated a lot since I type most of the time now.

Some computer software transcribe dictated (voice) notes now. My sister in law has been using one for years and it will get better as technology progresses further.

Will it totally kill handwritten letter totally? Maybe not in our lifetime but it MIGHT drive it to near extinction the next couple generations.

Again, just the way I see it...and I won't live long enough for you to prove me wrong.

I reckon that in the not too distant future, even computer typed letters and emails will be at risk. Instead of 'reading or writing', you will just have to 'speak or listen'

Aaarghhhh!!!!!!! Imagine having to listen to THE RESONATOR drone on all day here on IAP:mad:

Hey I just noticed!!!!! Happy Birthday Alex!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some time ago they said that books have no future due to computers, interent, digital book readers ...
Does anyone have the feeling that this is coming true ?

No email, no digital letter will ever have the same effect as personaly written message. And when you see VIP signing important contracts and document in front of cameras. Do you imagine the same effect with VIP presing ENTER on the keyboard ?

I think there will always be a place for unique writing instruments. As long as were not going in massive productions of simple pens, we do not need to worry. At least my opinion.

Skye, one more promotion and they will let you move around to the front of the computer.
