I am having trouble with 2 pencils which will not advance the lead without a lot of shaking and persuasion. The lead is advanced by means of pressing the button on the top of the pencil. Normally the lead freely falls out of the tip of the collet. Any suggestions on a fix before I ruin these attempting to fix the issue? The lead is 5.66mm

Nikon, I've made that kit many times and never had the problem you described. Hopefully someone here will have the answer for you. This one is well figured Koa wood. Is the collet that holds the lead in place expanding enough? Possibly a drop of lubricant on the plunger may help ?

It looks like this one? If yes take the pen apart and make sure everything is in order (the lead is ok, the spring etc.) It needs some attention so that the tip comes out enough so that the collet thing grabs well.

The plunger seems to be working, not sure about the collet expansion.

Nikon, push the button on top and visually look at the collet that holds the lead. The "fingers" on the collet should open enough to let the lead slide out smoothly.
If not, that's the problem. Not sure how to fix it though.

Following up with Bullwinkle's response
I have a pen that is a click style pen and the button is apparently threaded into the mechanism. I mention this because I can make the tip of the refill extend more or less from the tip of the pen by manipulating the clicker button by threading or unthreading the button. I dont even need to disassemble the pen to do this. I just twist the clicker button one way or the other. I thinking if your works the same you may be able to make the collet extend more to open the fingers more.
