Ok this is real casual conversation but I am sure there are a lot of Arthritis sufferers out there. So my question is, does any one have a method for controlling it without nasty prescriptions? Home remedies? etc....?

Good and bad suggestions:
Bee stings on the joints,
fire ant stings on the joints,

Seriously, my daughter learned that sleeping under and electric blanket helped her. Her doctor once told her that a heated water bed might help, which prompted her to try the electric blanket, which did help. Doesn't work that way in warm parts of the country or warm seasons. My daughter likes to stay very warm in the fall, winter and spring.

I have arthritis flair up on occasion but use strong ibuprofen or other OTC medicines. Mine is not serious but it does flair up two or three times a year for a few days - in a way that makes me not want to move out of bed or especially go outside. At this point I take a full dose of the OTC. Otherwise I stay away from OTC until really needed.

The Doc. had me taking 4 tablets of Gluosamine HCI 1500mg with Chondroitin Sulfate 1200mg and it was working takes about a month to start feeling anything different. With the other problems I have it was slowing down my water works so I cut it back to 1 tab for awhile. Doc. said this dosen"t happen very often.

Mike:

Glucosamine sulfate has been shown in numerous studies to slow the progression of osteoarthritis and some studies has demonstrated pain relief equilavent to a 600 mg dose of ibuprofen (without the possible associated digestive problems).

It is noted that the sulfate version absorbes better than the HCL version.

Glucosamine is made from crustacean shell fish, if you are allergic to shellfish the HCL version would re recommended.

3000 mg/day for a week or two and most arthritic folkes will feel less overall symptoms. Drop dose to 1500 mg/day (a maintance dose) after you have determined if the glucosamine is helping.

good luck,
steve

I have this same problem and I'm glad it's not like it used to be. I used to drink all kinds of caffeine drinks every day and eat lots of chocolate. I could barely pull myself up outta bed every day. Recently when I was sick and couldn't hold down any food for 4 days, I quit drinking coffee, sodas and quit eating chocolate. I never have any pain in the morning at all with the exception of the occasional yearly flare up. I also try to watch my salt intake.

Good evening to all suffers. I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my 30's. On a hot humid night I could bend my leg and wake my wife up with the sound. I have been on Gluosamine HCI 1500mg with Chondroitin Sulfate 1200mg for about 15 years. I get up and walk from sitting and have been almost pain free for the whole time. It does not work for everyone as my wife felt no relief from them. Try them and it takes a good 30 days to start to work.
Hay, if you have some relief it is better than nothing! :D:D:D

Try to find EMU oil and rubb it to the affected body part

I've been diagonosed with rather severe joint damage from arthritis in, of all places the big toe of my right foot. Doesn't sound so bad, right? Well I'm on my feet all day and a major component of my job is stepping with that foot and pivoting repeatively , which I'm sure has contributed to the problem over the years. Anyway I've recently been having pretty bad problems with this particular foot and nothing, prescription-wise seems to help. Like Becca I drink way too much caffeine and eat, according to my wife, too much chocolate, but hey turning is hungry work and chocolate helps....lol. So I think I'll try cutting down and maybe looking into the Glucosamine and the Chondroitin. I wouldn't mind hearing from more folks who've used either of these sucessfully.

I don't have arthritis, so I can't speak from experience, but I have a long standing issue with calcific tendonitis in both shoulders. I find that capsacin cream (the active ingredient in chili peppers) works well and I have heard good things about it for arthritis. It takes a few days of regular usage to really start working. Just don't get the stuff near your eyes.

Also a good reason to wash your hands BEFORE using the bathroom!![}:)]

I don't do capsacin cream, but love the capsacin in jalapeno dip, jalapeno poppers, jalapeno burgers, and jalapenos in general.

I have only limited arthritis.. some in my hands and wake every morning with a stiff back and it's a real B---- getting my shirt on on cold mornings... my left shoulder doesn't want to reach back for the sleeve... I generall start my day with two extra strength tylenol.

I appreciate all of the feed back, I just started my last 90 day treatment of Enbrel for Psoriasis ans Psoriatic arthritis. I am wanting to find something that does not have such negative side effects due to the fact that I also have a liver disorder. I believe I can take Glucosamine without it bothering my system so that sounds like it may be my next step. Again thank you for all the feed back.
