Currently I have an old Carba-Tec mini-lathe and two Shopsmiths. I made a lot of pens on a Shopsmith about 12-15 years ago. It works really well for this, not to mention providing a way to drill blanks, build jigs, etc. all on the same machine. Still a learning turner but I love the lathe!!
Here is my "shop":

And here is my '59 Shopsmith I rebuilt. I also have a later model (510)

Anyway, found this forum thru some of the guys on the Shopsmith forum who are into turning pens. If you guys are anything like those guys, I am going to enjoy hanging around here!!!

BTW, anyone got a line on some affordable mesquite? I love turning that stuff.

Usually the words 'affordable' and 'mesquite' don't go together well, if I had some it would be....but I don't have any of those logs laying around(yet).

Welcome from another Arkysaw member!!

Welcome Ben, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. Be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/library/general_reference/Getting_started_in_pen_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.
