Hi,

Just been cleaning a space in the shed and came across a bag of burr that I'd kind of forgot about! Remember putting them in there a year of so ago, but keep forgetting to sort them out!

Well I remembered today, but haven't a clue what this burr cap is? Looks Australian and is fairly weighty!

Any ideas?

PHIL

Id say it wasn't one of the mallees as they don't tend to have the open burrs, more of a tighter burr. this seems to have gummy areas?

White Top im off to check out!

It still looks "brainy" to me. I mean the Emory Dept. of pathology has a perfect example in one of the medical display cases. Of course the one you have is just a part of a brain though! (Get it, the brain has two main sections, lobes, oh never worry!)

Looks like this wood will be interesting to turn. I bet it would make for an astounding bowl with all the inclusions and such. It also would be an excellent candidate for stabilization with all those inclusions and such ... Great find with the exception that it was in your basement. Have fun and be sure to post what ever you make out of it!

Hello Phil
Its not white top. Its what they call Red Gum and its from austrailia. Yes it does have thouse black crater looking things in it and white top does not have anything like that. White top has black lines but not big craters and white top is imported only in blocks. Anyway you have a very nice burl there.

What happened to that poor tree to make a burl look like that? It is screaming with pain. Put it to rest in someone's warm hand as a fine writing instrument.

It must be nice to know everything, but in this case you are incorrect. White top OFTEN has craters and is OFTEN imported as burl caps. See http://www.burlsource.com/burls-white-top.html From a photo no one can be really sure.
