A good customer gave me this to make a pen from, She brought it home from Africa. It's hallow half way through so I thought I would just use the bottom part for the pen..(top half of pen would be tooth, bottom half some type of African wood..then maybe cut the hallow part into rings and use them as a pen holder

Interesting................very interesting. I would like to see one, may never do it myself but I would like to see it. First thought that comes to mind would be tooth and ebony or African Blackwood.

You might want to query Eagle, sadly not here. He can be found on the 'other' forum. He recently made some pens from wart hog tooth. I'm supposed to be a wordsmith, but his description of how hard that stuff was exceeded my abilities by a bunch. Tooth is enamel, very-very hard stuff. As others have said, what you have is also expensive. Personally, I would just hold on to it for a while until a serious project presents itself that would make it 'hippo tooth worthy'.

ThePenShop. Long story.

Think there should be any percautions taken when inhailing dust from that?

Actually, Eagle's pens were from warthog tusk. [8D] As with antler and other animal tissues, there is always a chance of bacteria being present so make sure you use extra precautions for your lungs. Also, be careful with heat build up when using tools on animal teeth. The material is prone to cracking if it gets to hot or if it changes temperatures rapidly.[8D]

Reminds me of a painful hot pop-tart and cold glass of milk situation I ran into many years ago...[:(!]
