I drive OTR long haul, coast to coast. Is there anyone else on here that drives for a living? Just curious.
Also, I am driving to Las Vegas and then to CA by way of I-70 and I-15. Are there any places or shops of interest to a novice penturner along that route? thks

I used to pull as an independant contractor until the rv industry collapsed.
I just sold my truck just over a week ago.

Was nice while it lasted.

Long time ago, in a far-a-way time.......I pulled double hoppers from the rice fields in Northern California and pulled 'PIGS' from the Bay area.

My middle son, just out of the Navy.....just leased himself a 2010 International......doing real well! He's got a beer run from Golden, Co to San Diego and he's really enjoying it! He's single right now and he going for the $$$ to pay off his P/U and some CCs. He's doing a lot better as an Owner/Operator than an employee. He's pulling down more $$$ in a week than he did in a month in the Navy!!!

I'm pulling a 53 footer triple spread dry van with a lift gate. I love driving, long as I'm paid for it, and I'm paid by the hour, so I have no traffic stress.

I hear on the radio this afternoon a driver just drove off the Bay Bridge! They said he lost control in the S curve, went through the rails and plunged 200 ft down landing on an island below. Not a pleasant way to go.

I always wanted to tandem with my wife long haul coast to coast..but she's a chicken and won't go for it. Well...that and I've seen the way she drives.

In another life.
A long time ago.
Now I just go sit and reminice at the I-80 truck stop when ever I go back to Illinois-Iowa.
Hard to believe that operation started as a little Texaco a few millineums ago.

I finally did it!

I landed a local job so no more OTR GARBAGE 4 ME! In fact, I only work 3-4 days a week so my workshop has been moved out of the basement. We threw away all of our furniture in the family room as we dont have TV in our house anymore, tore out the carpet and moved all my tools into the family room.
It's a 14' x 25' room with double french doors so I can even do BIG projects! I can barely wait to get back into the sawdust!

I drove OTR for 2 years. I loved it at first because I had never really traveled before at all. Getting paid to travel the country and see all the different land was nice for awhile but it got old fast. I would go out on the road for 3-4 weeks and only be home for 2 days then out again. The money was nice but I never had any time to enjoy it. I enjoy driving, I now drive a van locally doing deliveries, money is not near as good but I am home every evening and my boss is a super nice person.

No way on OTR, my son is almost 3 and he and my wife are way too important. But I guess if I have to I will.............

I never drove, but contracted many many trucks when I was working... once contracted a 14 truck move from Iron Mountain to Houston... needed the entire shipment in Houston in less than a week ... made it with 2 days to spare, and because of the frost laws, had to go west before they could go south. One piece was 70,000 and 65 feet long... a gantry for a crane for a ship.
Last major move was a mining plant out of Utah to Peru... took about 20 trucks on that one, but we had a couple of weeks to pull it off.
My step son is a long hauler... he drives for the big orange pumpkin.

WHen I was a kid, that is what I thought I wanted to do. Even liked drawing trucks, and could recognize what kind of truck was coming by the grill! Never lost that thought until I rode from Houston back to OKC with the boss and another guy. Spent a bit of time in the top buck of the sleeper. Lost any remnant of the desire then!

In 1980 . . .

In 1980 I worked for a LP gas company pulling butane and propane . . . Longest hauls were 600 miles or so . . . I made (2) OTR trips with a friend to see if that would be the ticket for me . . The best part was rolling while you are sleeping . . . He had a really nice truck with a huge sleeper area. I was probably more attracted to the nice truck than the potential "new" job . . .

Got out of that & became a Polygraph Examiner . . . aka "Interrogator With Magic Box"
