How do you want to use the collet chuck?

There may be other alternatives depending upon what you want to accomplish.

One problem with that chuck is that the collets are a proprietary size and you will not have the option of buying additional collets on other sizes from 3rd party vendors.

Steve,I have one and like it a lot,I use it for turning closed end pens and bottle stoppers mostly, like Randy said you are kinda limited to what you can hold with it,well worth the money as far as I'm concerned.

Another option is to pick up one of the MT CHUCKS that use the ER style collets. The chuck on the left in the photo holds ER-32 but many other ER sizes are available. This one runs $29.00 plus $10.00 express shipping direct from China.

Steve: Here is another alternative if you don't need a collet larger than 1/2". These are collets that slip directly into your lathe spindle.....MT2, presumably and are held in place with a draw bar. You can buy a set of seven for $50 or individual sizes for $9 apiece. For someone who just wants to go the collet route to hold a pen mandrel, this is the most economical way to go.....2 collets and a draw bar will run less than $30!!

I caught the Beall Collet Chuck on sale and bought collets on eBay and only have about $100 invested; but most certainly would have opted for the MT collets if I was looking at full list price for the Beall Chuck and collet set as I mostly use mine for just holding mandrels.

I just can't afford a Beall. And this is almost half the price. Anybody tried this out?

I've used mine for nearly a year and am happy with it. I never use a tapered pen mandrel anymore and it holds my bottle stopper mandrels just fine. I also use it to make modifications to Churchill parts etc. Very much worth the investment.
